I find myself in he unusual position of wanting to quote Frankie Boyle.....

I just heard him say that he thinks men who attack feminism are like people who throw stones at fire engines. Feminism is the only thing that can save them and they are attacking it, not welcoming it.

Like it Grin. It's bang on the money.

WaddIelikeapenguin · 31/08/2018 10:55

Brilliant.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 31/08/2018 11:07

Good analogy.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 31/08/2018 11:11

Like it.

Between agreeing with a Boyle bon mot and reading a Littlejohn piece that I agreed with - I'm going to need a bigger lie down and searching of my soul this weekend.

For Heaven's sake, aside from Linehan - when is another comedian I admire, like Dara O'Briain going to speak up? He was active enough during libel reform.

Frankie Boyle is a feminist ally for sure. That's a good quote from him. On his BBC show, he sticks two fingers up to the mandatory one woman on a panel rule, and has 3 women and 1 man instead. And he's also very good at shutting up, letting them speak, and then responding thoughtfully to what they have said. Not the usual piss taking, mansplaining or interrupting with 'hilarious' comments.

I'm not a fan of all of his comedy, but he's a good one for sure.

Nish Kumar is pretty sound on feminism too.

I used to think FB was just a deliberate shock jockey and had no interest in him whatsoever, but a (now ex) boyfriend took me to see his live show and it was really good.

I actually refer to this particular bit quite often, where he compares people blaming immigrants for austerity to ‘watching Colombo with his granny’:

I think he's just responding to the changing public mood. I may be cynical and he may be correct in what he says in this instance. But I find it incredibly hard to think that Frankie Boyle of all people really truly gives a shit about women.

If he really has mended his ways, good on him. However, I don't think an even halfway decent man would have ever told a woman that "I’ll abuse you so badly your gynaecologist will think you’ve been in a f*ing car crash". Feminist ally I don't think so.

Agreed, I was sick to death of all the Right-On Skeptics comedians like Robin Ince who repeatedly made child abuse and rape comments just to prove how unfettered they are and that comedians must be free to say anything. FWIW - didn't find it credible then, less so now.

GreenGloves · 31/08/2018 13:42

Yes I noticed his show often has more women on than men.

Although his autiobiography was chock full of rape jokes (don't ask me why I read it!). Maybe he has moved on a bit since then?

fidgetspinner555 · 31/08/2018 13:43

Blimey - I usually despise the man! I may change my mind....

'However, I don't think an even halfway decent man would have ever told a woman that "I’ll abuse you so badly your gynaecologist will think you’ve been in a f*ing car crash". '

OK, that's totally horrendous and indefensible. I have no idea why anyone tells jokes like this. There's nothing remotely funny about it
