Definition of a "Pile on"

A thread was deleted under this notion yesterday and I had a thread deleted for the same reason a while ago.

Am I correct in thinking that the definition of a "pile on" is 'a thread about a specific person's actions which attracts a complaint but which doesn't get dissenting voices on the actual thread"?

Because I'm struggling to understand why MN delete threads which do not contravene their T & C, etc, are absolutely concerned with Feminist issues but which might have upset the person who said the stupid or ridiculous thing was mentioned in the thread.

vicky

Yes i think so

Its one of those mumsnet phrases which wind me up, apparently if more than a certain amount of posters disagree then people should stop posting

But the number is a secret...

And if on a thread a person says something then the people replying shoukd take it in turns and ask one question at a time and wait for the question to be answered

Cos if you dont and 10 people ask 10 different questions then thats a pile on as well....so a degree of psychic ability if helpful as well

And some people dont want someone to disagree and if more than 3 posts disagree then they start complaining of a pile on

I think thats it

Flame is another one

Dont get me fucking started on flame

It also annoys that what they do is delete the entire thread, rather than simply curtailing posts. This has the effect of banning a discussion, despite the subject matter being of relevance and not in itself contravening T & C.

The fact that a named individual (in the case of yesterday's deleted thread) has done something alarming/stupid/outrageous/etc and is being called out for it - and that individual or their supporter(s) don't like it being discussed - is neither here nor there.

Surely?

Nope

I agree again

(No idea what thread it was....)

But in theory i dont see why they cant just close some of these thread and leave them up, lots of people go to a lot of effort with their posts

It was the one about Roz thingy and the move to end censorship of certain types of porn...

I think that in this case it may mean that someone fond of filing lawsuits complained.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 30/08/2018 12:23

Quite pleased i missed it now

But your point still stands vicky

So if someone posts, just for example, 'That Hitler was a very nice chappie', and a great many people post saying that he wasn't, in no uncertain terms, is that a pile on and the thread gets pulled? Because of the argumentative tone or something.

Or is it when the OP says 'I don't really like that Hitler bloke very much!' And loads of people post agreeing, but more generally this offends someone or some people in the wider public, who complain and then it's pulled?

I'm not suggesting that anyone alive now is like Hitler, by the way. That was obviously just a jokey example. Although obviously if they were, in a dystopian universe where we had the internet in the 1930s, it might be impossible to discuss them on Mumsnet. Which would be kind of a shame.

“

I suppose there’s a danger that they could be accused of bias and influencing the discussion.
Unfortunately, it does mean that anyone wanting to get the thread pulled just has to instigate a pile-on to do it, as I believe has been happening.

pywife

I think the term pile on maybe fair on a pregnancy support thread on the pregnancy board

But not on AIBU

And not on FWR or brexit or in the news which i see as being more debatey or augmentative

But otherwise yeah...what you said
