Someone has done some amazing detective work: Inauthentic Selves: The modern LGBTQ+ Movement Is Run By Philanthropic Astroturf And Based On Junk Science

Bd that's an extraordinarily good article. Reminds me of reading the Sunday Times Insight articles back when the Times was the national paper of record. I wush though that the author had felt able to publish under their own name and on a proper journal rather than Medium.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/08/2018 20:56

I'd seen that article before. It's scary how what may seem like tin-foil-hattery can actually be true.

louiseaaa · 27/08/2018 21:00

I've skim read that (took at least half an hour) and bookmarked it for later. Ye gods. That's frightening, even if only the half of if is true.

There was a link in there to this:

www.theguardian.com/education/2017/sep/25/bath-spa-university-transgender-gender-reassignment-reversal-research

A university ethics committee revoking previous given approval for a study on the grounds that it is not politically correct and might upset someone!

It's a great piece of investigative journalism.

This bit stood out for me:

"What this translates to, in other words, is a goal of considering gender dysphoria no longer a mental illness — and to consider gender dysphoria a mental illness as a ground for violating a trans person’s human rights. This could mean that with no diagnosis, doctors cannot be sued for malpractice for prescribing transition. Do you see an issue with that?"

That's a real light-bulb moment for me... We've been saying on here for ages that there are going to be law-suits in droves 20, 30 years down the line when sufferers of ROGD realise they weren't really trans, just confused, unhappy kids who are now surgically mutilated and sterile... Except that if she's right about the implications of "de-medicalising" the process, there will be no-one to sue, just a collection of individuals who "stupidly decided to self-medicate/undergo cosmetic surgery that they now regret."

Truly terrifying.

Bumping this thread for people reading about Linda Bellos facing a private prosecution, so you know what we are up against.

LadybirdsAreBirds · 28/08/2018 12:10

This is the single most important thing to read today

Charliethefeminist · 28/08/2018 12:15

Agree, terrific read. Short answer is rich white men, I guess.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 29/08/2018 04:25

This story appeared in my newsfeed today. The judge so fervent in his ruling and an incredibly wealthy law firm representing him. In the meantime, the woman he stabbed 30 times has to do fund-raising to pay her medical bills.

There's gold in them thar brave and stunning hills.

It kind of leads you to speculate about what the judge might be wearing under his robes, doesn't it?

I must get around to finishing reading this. Started a while back, then forgot!

Great article if a little long - I've have preferred it cut down into 2/3 as it covers distinct topics - Funding, Definitions, Implications for Future.

Very informative and well researched - joining all those obscure dots that many don't want to be joined.

It's like snake oil as a cure-all - that's the best analogy I can come up with. Except for these days, the snake oil is manufactured on an industrial level and the numerous salespeople and advertisers are in their employ, in a variety of different guises.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 31/08/2018 07:23

They are obliterated as a distinct legal class of people by self-identification legislation — the legal ramifications of which could set trans rights back years, which has been raised by gender critical trans activists such as Miranda Yardley.

This stood out to me.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 31/08/2018 07:24

As did this about those who stand to profit in money terms by this relatively recent explosion in TG civil rights:

The influence these large foundations and their funders have on our politics cannot be underestimated, and it needs to be questioned. The transgender civil rights movement consists of (i) large numbers of astroturf organizations funded by billionaires with financial interest in its success, (ii) medical professionals who stand to gain from ‘selling’ transgenderism to the public (and who are happy to lie to the public about their treatments) and (iii) pharmaceutical companies that appear to be engaging in illegal off-label marketing with said medical professionals.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 31/08/2018 07:33

And the comments about there being no unbiased research for TGs to use to inform their decisions are insightful. The contention cited in the article is that much of the research and articles about treatments, as for many drugs, are funded by those with vested interests ie Big Pharm:

How prevalent is medical ghost-writing,? The New York Times estimated in 2009 that 5–11% of medical articles are ghostwritten, though this ultimately depends on the drug. With one drug (sertraline), between 18% and 44% of articles on the subject were funded and ghostwritten by Pfizer. But without disclosure, we do not know how prevalent the problem might actually be.
