Help me find a quotation - probably by Jordan Peterson - about pronoun use?

Can you help me find a quotation - I believe by Jordan Peterson - about pronoun use?

It was something like "beyond what gender you wish to present, and how I may perceive you, there is a third sphere, which is society. And society depends on instantaneous judgements of which of the two sexes you are."

I'm not remembering it very well, but it was to do with being forced to do doublethink when a visibly masculine person demands you think of them as female. And it was to do with this third sphere of society, separate from individuals interacting.

Thank you for posting this. It was interesting. I just wish I could find the exact quotation.

It’s on a video about identity he did

Where identity is a negotiated position, you don’t get to chose it

He has an enormous back catalogue of lectures and talks on YT.
Always free and always thought provoking.

From memory it sounds like the speech he gave to the C16 committee

Sorry, I can't help with exact quote- but would be interested if someone can find it.

I have listened to some of his discussions about identity, which sound similar- where he is saying that identity is not somehthing you get to decide for yourself and then impose on others, as it seems to be being used now.

He describes this as something narcissistic 2 year olds believe.

He says identity is socially negotiated. There are concepts that exist within a social world and identity is formed/negotiated somewhere between, how you view yourself, how you present/are perceived to the social external world, how you are perceived within the concepts and language used to describe those concepts within the social world.

An individual doesn't get to create only an internal identity, which is not negotiated with external presentation, concepts, perception and language of others and insist on imposing it.

That is madness.

(The above is my memory and interpretation/understanding of what he said.)

I think this concept of 'identity' has not been sufficiently challenged, and is somehow being accepted currently as something with power that individuals can wield to control others.
We need to think about identity formation and what that means much more deeply.

That's getting near the heart of it, Baby. I appreciate it.

Thank you to all who've helped.
