Question about "men who have periods"

rocketpocket · 24/08/2018 21:32

I was just wondering why, if their periods are so triggering or whatever, FtM trans people don't simply not have periods? I know it's not a guarantee but many forms of contraception stop periods. Surely there are other medications available too that will stop them?

There's a lot of stuff around for "people" that have periods, as if there's a huge amount of women identifying as men who are having regular periods so we can't simply use the word "women" anymore.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered.

I've wondered this. It's relatively easy to stop your periods.

That has occurred to me too. I had no periods for 15 year on Mirena. It was fabulous as I had terrible periods. Of course it would not suit everyone, but still

LadybirdsAreBirds · 24/08/2018 21:44

Maybe it's to do with taking testosterone as well, come to think of it.

VickyEadie · 24/08/2018 21:44

Mirena doesn't stop periods for everyone - I had one and still got a fairly standard period (which was better than the two week, Niagara Falls ones with agonising pain I had been getting, however).

Vicky

That's unfortunate

I imagine taking an estrogen based contraceptive designed for females wouldn't suit a person who identified as a man or non-binary.

Testosterone halts ovulation and periods relatively quickly for trans men who do decide to transition from female to male. I believe within weeks.

ZeroFuchsiasGiven · 24/08/2018 21:45

Contraindicated with testosterone? Although I'd assumed if you went on testosterone periods would stop anyway.

What I find odd is that a young woman suffering from gender dysphoria to such an extent that they identify as male might later get pregnant by choice and breastfeed. I can't see how that doesn't make the dysphoria much worse.

rocketpocket · 24/08/2018 21:46

Ladybirds,

I wondered if it was to do with testosterone too, but just wondered if anyone knew the actual answer.

So - do I assume that the transmen who still have periods aren't taking testosterone, then?

Agreed. It's one of the most female things that someone can do, isn't it?

I'd imagine that there are various reasons why transmen don't all take medication to stop their periods, including not being medically able to do so, or not being far enough along that journey that they are willing and able to have the conversation with their doctor about taking stuff.

JellySlice · 24/08/2018 21:54

Does testosterone stop periods, though? Isn't it oestrogen and progesterone in specific combinations that cause periods?

OlennasWimple · 24/08/2018 22:07

Seems like testosterone stops some people's cycles, but not everyone's

I suspect I would get terrible acne if I took it, as I take spironolactone to improve my skin, which is also prescribed to transwomen to suppress testosterone
