Female human rights activists facing death penalty in KSA

Sorry - can't link to article in The Telegraph:

**A rare execution, even for Saudi Arabia.
The kingdom is seeking the death penalty for a 29-year-old female human rights activist, Israa al-Ghomgham, above, for instigating protests. While Saudi Arabia has one of the highest execution rates in the world, calling for capital punishment for a woman in a nonviolent case is extremely unusual.

Ms. Ghomgham’s case “sets a dangerous precedent for other women activists currently behind bars,” Human Rights Watch said.

It is yet another example of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s crackdown on dissent, poking holes in the reformist image he has been seeking.

Separately, Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil giant, Aramco, suspended plans to go public, a deal that would have been the biggest initial offering on record.

I saw this, it's horrific. Thanks for posting.

Just terrifying

Is our government making any representations?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 23/08/2018 09:57

I've not seen much about it as it popped up on a newsfeed yesterday and I was running about like a headless chicken, so haven't had time to poke around.

I wonder if amnesty will get off their arse?

I wonder if this is deliberate intimidation of feminists by the Saudis. They’ll probably give it maximum publicity, then have some last minute “gracious pardoning” and commution to a prison sentence, to avoid creating a martyr and international outrage/backlash.
I feel rage and sorrow for all the women who have to live in that mediaeval chauvinist shithole, where they don’t even have personal autonomy but are subject to their male guardian for life.

Difficult to say really - the other 4 activists that the Saudi prosecutor is also seeking the death penalty on are, I would presume, men.

(yes, yes, I do know that whataboutery and 'what about the menz' are frowned upon here - but meh)

Oh but at least the wealthy women can now drive their fat BMWs to the shopping mall so that's OK then.

Women rights my arse.

The new regime are taking the idea of equality in a disturbing direction with their reforms.

There's been a lot of media effort to sell the prince as some kind of progressive/moderating force. He's not.
