Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I guess that makes it pretty clear what my MP thinks of self ID etc then...

... which is a shame because she is, so far, doing some good work (better than the last one). However, this has made me feel pretty disappointed today.

The way things are, I should think within Labour it's a thought crime even to stay quiet on the issue. It's all very North Korean.

Gncq · 19/08/2018 22:10

It's all very much uneducated copy-paste waffle though isn't it.

I mean, I support all lgbt people and rights to live without discrimination and equal access to services etc. I also support reform to the GRA (think it should be made stricter). I also think same-sex services and activities should remain same-sex.

So they haven't actually said anything concrete. Without delving deeper you don't really know what your MP thinks wrt same-sex provision. Have you contacted specifically about that?

SirVixofVixHall · 19/08/2018 22:13

Who is your MP, do you feel able to say ?

greenlanes · 19/08/2018 22:17

I love that she refers to the 100s of trans people. What about the millions, quite literally millions, of women just n this country who are getting a raw deal almost exclusively due to their sex. Does she not care about all of us?

Sandinmypants · 19/08/2018 22:20

It is a female MP in Wales. Probably shouldn’t say more than that (though I don’t think it’d be too hard to work out).

She posted this on her Facebook page. It received a few (30 ish) ‘likes’ but interestingly no comments. When she recently posted something about a Brexit vote she had hundreds of comments.

Due to my job, I cannot comment on what she has posted. I have to be very careful. I would be interested in a dialogue with her but I am not sure she would be very open to it after posting that!

OP posts:
Sandinmypants · 19/08/2018 22:22

I think the tone of that post is such that she clearly does not support any kind of gender critical stance.

Also, what is BAME?

OP posts:
Sandinmypants · 19/08/2018 22:23

greenlanes I completely agree with you

OP posts:
SirVixofVixHall · 19/08/2018 22:24

Agree it is cut and paste bollocks. All such nonsense , what on earth is a “non binary identity “ when you actually try and pin it down ? Everyone is non binary. Identity is a ridiculous nonsense, no one I know has an identity. We just ARE.
If all “Trans identities” are “valid” then I assume that includes all the stuff spouted by Stonewall, eg fetishes. So your female MP thinks that a sexual fetish is a “valid identity “ ? Good to know , so that you can vote for someone with a brain next time.

UpstartCrow · 19/08/2018 22:25

'BAME' = Black and Ethnic Minority.
Many BAME women cannot use mixed sex spaces and services. Supposedly woke people will end up forcing them back into the home.

TransplantsArePlants · 19/08/2018 22:25

I don't think it has any evidence of thinking at all...

Wanderabout · 19/08/2018 22:27

Sorry to hear that.

I strongly suspect she doesn't have any information about how it affects women's rights.

It would be worth going to see her and asking how your current legal rights in the EA will remain legally and practically intact under self-ID.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/08/2018 22:27

I’ve been googling female Welsh Labour MPs.... Grin . There are ten. I’m hoping it isn’t who I think it might be.

Sandinmypants · 19/08/2018 22:29

Has anyone else seen any other Labour MPs posting anything similar? It is quite dogmatic and I wonder whether they have all been told to post it? Or if there is personal choice on the part of the MP about whether to post?

OP posts:
Sandinmypants · 19/08/2018 22:30

If you were in my shoes and wanted to contact her to talk about this, can anyone give me some pointers about what they would say? I guess with specific reference to the post she made on Facebook?

There's a recent thread about meeting with MPs, may be useful:

Sandinmypants · 19/08/2018 22:44

Thank you I will check that out.

I’m really quite disappointed she has shared it. I rated her as our MP but this is a bit of a curveball.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/08/2018 22:49

I went to see my MP, ( not the same one as you as mine is a man). He was good actually. He listened, he was polite, his assistant took notes, he didn’t express an opinion either way, (unsurprisingly), but he sent a follow up email and it went well I think, on the whole.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/08/2018 22:58

Op, take a list of questions to ask her, and note down her answers. That statement is just cut a paste nonsense, but shows the Labour policy starkly. I can’t imagine that if the public knew what some of these “identities” were, and what it means in real terms for the protection of single sex spaces, that they would be remotely happy about self id.

WarmWishes · 19/08/2018 23:05

Sandinmypants I have a similar experience, a local councillor who I rated has started tweeting opinions on this issue and uses the acronym TERF. I don't quite know how to handle it. Technically it isn't an abuse term but we all know it really is.

I still think you should contact your mp and so should I. She needs to know we are out here and we have a dissenting view. What have we got to lose, except our hard won rights?

SturdyEarmuffs · 19/08/2018 23:09

OP, have a look at the statement from FOVAS - see the thread headed 'open letter from survivors of male violence' - it's such a powerful statement I'd be interested in your MPs take on that when compared to her understanding of what is at stake.

Sandinmypants · 20/08/2018 08:24

Thanks for those suggestions. I will take a look and I’m going to have a think about how best to address this with my MP.

OP posts:
Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 20/08/2018 09:50

I saw my female MP last week (see thread above). It went well, I think.

I was prepared that she'd be like Penny Mordaunt or Baroness Williams, Maria Miller, but knew I had to say something.

I'd advise anybody to see their MP as face to face is far more effective than emails, plus they have to see you.

One tip I had off here was to create a page - scenarios - of how residents would be impacted should the GRA be reformed in favour of the removal of single sex spaces.

They care about numbers, voters and women will outnumber TRAs.

I said I planned to campaign locally and alluded to more and more women, like me, who were waking up and campaigning locally.

Good luck

FeminaSum · 20/08/2018 09:51

"All trans and non-binary identities are valid."

What does that even mean? Because that's not even just taking the TWAW line, that's supporting the 'I identify as a wolf-spirit demi-boy, femme on Fridays' nonsense. And Stephonknee.

I tend to think that as soon as someone uses the word 'valid' in relation to trans issues, they're just virtue-signalling.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/08/2018 11:53

Agree FeminaSum , If things
Ike wolf-spirit Demi boys were actually “valid” then we wouldn’t need to say so. It is like mothers talking to stroppy toddlers “yes darling, you are a lovely wolf, I’m a mummy wolf, grrr” .
That this is the level of thought in politics today makes me want to cry.

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 20/08/2018 16:58

Hoping this is not your MP on Twitter today

Marama Davidson MP
@MaramaDavidson
Trans women are women. The men who are threats to women's spaces, are men. Trans women who are so acutely oppressed, marginalised and dehumanised - are my sisters. Not my enemies.
