Companies offering "women only deals" - what's the legality?

Putting aside the whole trans issue for a minute - presumably companies offering women only deals are able to discriminate against men legally?
Does anyone know what point of law this is legal and would it be legal to discriminate against women in the second manner for men only deals?

Then to address the trans issue - would it be illegal to identify as a woman purely to gain the financial reward of a discount? And would it be legal to discriminate against transwomen to exclude them from a financial discount aimed at women?

Does anyone know?

And yes these are questions I've been zt
thinking about due to another thread but is not a TAAT.

Can you give an example of a "women only" deal?

Women are often allowed cheap entry into nightclubs aren't they?

Ifailed · 18/08/2018 10:04

According to Citizens Advice, a nightclub charging a higher price for entry to a man because of his sex (note not gender!) is direct sex discrimination.

I haven't seen any women only deals for ages.

FruitOnAPlatter · 18/08/2018 10:16

I don't believe it's legal - and I don't believe I've seen such things for many, many years..

MyAuntyBadger · 18/08/2018 17:29

Wasn't car insurance affected by this a few years ago? Iirc it was deemed discrimination to charge more for men even though their was statistical evidence that they were more likely to make a claim.

I saw a women only deal yesterday actually, weirdly enough. I was quite shocked. I suppose if they were aware of the law they would have just let a man who made a fuss have it too.

Saw an instagram post about a cafe (in New Zealand maybe) where men were charged more. Although I believe the profits from that went to charity.

Not sure how I feel about this. Economically speaking, price discrimination is an effective tool. E.g. why students often have discounts on things, or pensioners. In certain situations it simply makes sense to charge different prices to different groups of people. Why shouldn't sex be one such group? Because you can't change it about yourself perhaps, but you can't change being a student that much either til you are done, or pensioners aren't suddenly young and working again either.
