Stunning and brave

www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/becoming-christine-transgender-ceo-hallquist-prepares-to-go-to-work-as-a-woman/Content

"Dave Hallquist used to lift 90-pound weights for 15 repetitions during regular trips to the gym. Christine limits herself to 30 pounds for 30 reps — partly because she's lost strength since she switched from testosterone to estrogen. "

"As Christine, she said, she's less angry and a better listener."

Christine has just won the Democratic nomination, beating a 14 year old boy. twitter.com/VTdems/status/1025152121547776001

Christine was, naturally, inspired by the experiences of Muslim girls to seek to become governor, and really relates to their experiences.

Less angry and a better listener. Aye, right.

TransplantsArePlants · 15/08/2018 11:17

I love how the Elle article says one of the other Democratic nominees 'is literally 14 years old'. As opposed to identifyingas 14 year old?

womanformallyknownaswoman · 15/08/2018 11:29

I can't say what I think due to targeting and guidelines but you can guess.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 15/08/2018 11:31

When is the world going to wake up to this? It’s a fucking joke.

Haworthia · 15/08/2018 12:12

This video from Channel 4 news was kind of interesting:

twitter.com/channel4news/status/1029549828169187329?s=21

Christine describes the lightbulb moment when her daughter explains that the “transphobia” she’s experiencing is just how women are treated. Talks about how annoying it is when men tell her to “smile”. Acknowledges that transwomen used to be men and are raised and socialised with male privilege. Kind of refreshing.

The replies say what we’re all thinking, though.

TransplantsArePlants · 15/08/2018 12:24

Haworthia

Actually, I am not thinking what many of those nasty blokes are saying on that thread

Good on Christine; she seems generally nice and thoughtful. But what sticks in the craw is that

  1. She may not have got where she is without male socialisation plus being Brave and Stunning.

  2. Having sexism man-splained.

SeaWitchly · 15/08/2018 13:55

So the choice of canditates was between a 14 year old boy and a transgender woman?

Hmm
noeffingidea · 15/08/2018 15:00

The general public is just not buying the TWAW thing. Having said that, some of the comments on that thread do come across as rude and ignorant.
Personally I don't have a problem with any transgender person running for office, as long as they are not a TW taking up a place on a shortlist thats specifically set up to encourage women to enter politics. I don't think this person should be prejudged on the grounds of being trans.

hackmum · 15/08/2018 15:33

I was quite cheered by the line about the daughter saying that this wasn't transphobia, this was what it was like being a woman. And her indignation at the guy in the street who told her to smile.

I mean, obviously we've been saying this stuff for years. But still.

boatyardblues · 15/08/2018 15:46

That’s one dodgy syrup that Christine is sporting. Are there no decent wig shops in New England?

pachyderm · 15/08/2018 17:02

Christine does not in a million years pass so how can it be misogyny?

TransplantsArePlants · 15/08/2018 17:19

pachyderm

I really don't know either

Also, did Dave never note that his wife or any of his female friends had something to say about being patronised, harassed or abused? Did it need to happens to Christine to be believable? Confused

tm75531 · 15/08/2018 18:20

It's funny, a lot of what Christine says in that video would be called transphobic if someone who didn't identify as trans said it!

NothingOnTellyAgain · 15/08/2018 18:41

A 14 yo boy?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 15/08/2018 18:44

I can't say what I think due to targeting and guidelines but you can guess

This.

seafret · 15/08/2018 19:22

Also, did Dave never note that his wife or any of his female friends had something to say about being patronised, harassed or abused? Did it need to happens to Christine to be believable?

Yes. That's the sexism/misogyny and lack of empathy toward women isn't it... if women notice and complain we are exaggerating/ paranoid/ no sense of humour.

And I expect Dave was a typical male offender-defender. He had to be or he would have noticed the bahaviour.

Still no women candidates :(

MrsFogi · 15/08/2018 19:41

I sighed with despair to see the BBC news article on this nomination referring to "The Pink Wave: How women are shaping this election". I despair on so many levels.......

Ereshkigal · 15/08/2018 19:54

"As Christine, she said, she's less angry and a better listener."

Fuck off Angry

Ereshkigal · 15/08/2018 19:55

That's a general "fuck off" borne of utter despair btw.

QuietContraryMary · 16/11/2018 09:26

Well Christine did spectacularly badly. In a state won by the Democrats for the House by 43%, and for the Senate by 40%, Hallquist lost by 15%.
