I haven’t posted on this board before but have read a fair few threads. I have been using the ovia fertility app - for those who haven’t used it before, it gives you the option to answer various questions and you can then see as a percentage what the responses from other users are to the same question.
One of the questions I was given asked
‘What is your gender?’
The only options given as possible answers were:
‘I identify as female’ or ‘I identify as male’.
This really concerned me, that an app supposedly designed for women to track their menstrual cycle and fertility, was prepared to alienate us in this way.
I emailed them and their response was that they aimed to be as ‘inclusive as possible to all women in our diverse user base’.
Clearly they are less concerned about women than about being ‘inclusive’. I reminded them that conception and menstruation are down to sex not gender - they thanked me for my feedback!

I sent a similar email to Amnesty this week as they asked me to sign a petition to support the campaign in Argentina for legal abortion for pregnant people.

They also said they were doing it to be inclusive. Ffs.

My DH was asked which gender he identified as while booking a vasectomy last week........ He was totally baffled!!

The next time someone actually asks me what gender I identify with I'm going to innocently say 'What's gender?' and watch them stumble and splutter over their explanation.

Then, when they've finished, I'm going to look confused and then suddenly smile and say 'Oh, you mean what sex am I? Female' as if it's just a lightbulb moment.

They will think I'm bonkers but it will give me satisfaction.

Excellent idea fairenuff - think I will start doing the same

I think “what do you mean by gender” is actually a really reasonable question to ask in these circumstances. For one it means you’ll give the relavent information being requested. Which is probably sex in most cases, but perhaps occasionally they genuinely are asking about ‘gender identity’ (in which case they better have all inclusive options including ✔️None - I reject gender as an oppressive social construct Grin

I have been using Clue for the last 3 or so years to track my periods and ovulation.
They have become increasingly woke.

“Who is the Clue app for?
We've always tried to be relatable and easy to understand without referring to gender.

Instead of designing for specific user personas or an abstract idea of a "woman," Clue is designed to be happy, quick to use and to help in the discovery of accurate insights. We believe these apply to all our millions of users, regardless of gender.

In the 100+ pages of scientifically supported text in the English version of Clue — that covers topics of menstrual health, fertility, common medical conditions, PMS/PME, sex, breasts, ovaries, vaginas and so many other topics — we never once refer to "women" or "female." (Other languages present unique challenges when it comes to gendered language, but we are working on improving this, too.)

We did that as an effort to be accurate toward our users, not as an effort to be "politically correct." When making decisions about the language we use, we feel confident that accuracy is a good foundation upon which to build.”

Hmm

There are cross dressers who realise that they are male but enjoy the experience of pretending to be female. They're not trans.
