Can a man teach feminism?

Reading the Guardian colour supp today, an article about gal dem quotes 2 young black women saying they were shocked, when taking a class on Feminism at Bristol university, that it was taken by white man.
Firstly, I see no relevance in his race. But why shouldn't a man teach Feminism?

So although I perhaps would have benefited from a female perspective on the subject

No shit, Sherlock.

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 11/08/2018 15:02

Yes poor little things.

JS374phina · 11/08/2018 15:03

Agree to disgaree. It is beyond ridiculous to expect a woman to only succeed at getting a job in speaking on women's rights.

You haven't even heard his speech yet! This is why I believe some men are not as active in fighting for the cause because of comments like this. I honestly think it's sad for only women to speak out and fight for this cause. It should be anyone and everyone.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 11/08/2018 15:04

Should feminism not be covered at all because not all the seminars can be led by women?

No, they should pay a woman to do it. One with a vagina for avoidance of doubt.

I didn't say that men can't help the cause.

Bewilderness has a list of things men can do to advance the cause of women.

Teaching feminism is not on it.

Stopping watching porn, using prostitutes, strip clubs, catcalling, these are all things men could do if they wanted to.

Calling out their friends doing the above, they could do.

Teaching feminism - no.

Do they check that at interview stage or at offer - is it enough just to confirm or should you let someone check?

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 11/08/2018 15:10

It will be like Pope Joan all over again. In reverse.

JS374phina · 11/08/2018 15:10

Very closed minded.

Ive just asked my partner what he thought on this issue as it seems to be very divided amongst women (I presume we all are?)

As a very outspoken activist in many things, he pulled a face of confusion and responded 'so men also should not give seminars on pregnancy?'

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 11/08/2018 15:11

Behold, a man has spoken and we are wrong.

You can't make this shit up.

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 11/08/2018 15:12

This is why you don't even understand it.

Go to you tube and look up PeachYogurt.

Guide to radical feminism.

You...not your Nigel.

starzig · 11/08/2018 15:12

They would have to strip you to check. That would be an infringement of female rights. Oops, back to square 1.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 11/08/2018 15:13

We can tell if you're a cunty woman or not. No need for a strip search.

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 11/08/2018 15:13

And on that note I have plants to buy. With my own money that I earnt myself working in construction. If that's ok with your partner. Lol.

UpstartCrow · 11/08/2018 15:14

Men can lecture on feminism in the same way that white people can lecture on racism and BAME activism. Or straight people can lecture about gay activism.

starzig · 11/08/2018 15:19

I suppose if it discussing facts then that is fine. My problem is when I hear feminism I think of extremist preaching as opposed to campaigns for equality.

You can't be serious!

Wow. You really do have a chip on your shoulder about this. Obviously you have had some bad experiences with men from what your attitude is like. Wake up, we all have! Doesn't mean I am going to put all men down. Love how you criticized the opinion of a man even though he is on your side of the issue! Speaks volumes about you.

I feel very sorry for you.

UpstartCrow · 11/08/2018 15:35

You forgot to call any of us 'bitter'.

JS374phina · 11/08/2018 15:38

It is sad but that is the reality of it. It honestly should be recognisation of the individual regardless of being a man or woman, but seems some women have gone too far the opposite way now.

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 11/08/2018 15:38

Having attended a talk on toxic masculinity by Michael Conroy (who seems to have disappeared off twitter, what happened?) my answer is... sort of. A man can teach the effects of sex inequality from a male perspective - albeit an understanding one - but it's not strictly "feminism" in the sense I would use it

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 11/08/2018 15:38

She isnt criticising the opinion of a man

She just really doesnt give a shit what your partner thinks about feminism

And it doesnt mean she has had a bad experience just becuase she doesnt care about a random mans opinion

Ive not had a bad experience and i dont care what he thinks either

Though im sure he is lovely...

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 11/08/2018 15:39

Nooe

Belay that last

I dont know if he is lovely

But im sure you think he is lovely

Cwenthryth · 11/08/2018 15:40

I really don’t see why a university lecturer teaching a course/module on ‘feminism’ as an academic subject needs to be female. History, philosophy, literature - the facts don’t change based on who is presenting them, surely. This isn’t the same debate as whether men can be feminists or feminist allies - this isn’t ‘doing’ feminism or feminist activism, it’s presenting an academic subject, and I think it’s a risky route to go down if you restrict who can teach something based on their biology/background.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/08/2018 15:42

Seems I was right!

2 pages and some posters are incredibly irritated... and still the pig can't sing!
