Imagine that, 2% of young people sterilised.

Just thought I'd say welcome to FWR, Cigarstring. Always good to see someone new posting, are you an ex-lurker?

Cigarstring · 09/08/2018 19:12

Thanks, I only recently found out about this stuff (3 months). Steep learning curve. Wasn't expecting mumsnet to be the go to place, but having stumbled across it, it clearly is. Am shocked at the government and mps.

We all are, op. It makes no sense.

No sense at all.

Welcome to mumsnet Cigarstring :)

FFS, in this paper, the BMJ is quoting Action for Trans Health, and perpetuating the suicide myth which has been totally discredited.

A lack of specialists has led to a spike in self medicating and mental health crises, says Jack Doyle, press officer and advocacy coordinator for Action for Trans Health, the largest UK based campaign for trans healthcare reform and support.

“I know four trans people who have attempted or died by suicide in the past year while waiting for NHS care.” He adds that a lot of trans people are forced to seek out private options in the UK and abroad because of the rising waiting times.

womensvoicesmatter · 09/08/2018 19:26

I wonder if the BMJ knows that one of the key members of Action for Trans Health has just been suspended from their NUS post as Trans Officer for running a blog that showed pictures of them getting their dick out in public, including at their NUS desk - along with underage incest porn.

womensvoicesmatter · 09/08/2018 19:31

I wonder if the BMJ appreciate that ATH is an anarchist / antifa-inspired group that advocates violence against women?

After a 20-something transactivist attacked and beat up 60 year old feminist Maria MacLachlan, ATH tweeted in support of the attacker Tara Wood (who was later found guilty in court).

"Punching terfs is the same as punching Nazis. Fascism must be smashed with the greatest violence to ensure our collective liberation from it"

You can see a screenshot of the tweet here: pbs.twimg.com/media/DJxctZaWsAMO-ba.jpg

womensvoicesmatter · 09/08/2018 19:34

I wonder if the BMJ is on board with Action for Trans Health's bonkers manifesto, which includes the following:

There will be no clinics, and no authorities. We will conduct our own research, and experiment with our own bodies. We will heal and grow together. We will accumulate knowledge and share it freely and accessibly. We demand nothing less than the total abolition of the clinic, of psychiatry, and of the medical-industrial complex. We demand an end to capitalist & colonialist “medicine”.

Or their demand for an end to borders, prisons and police.

That seems so unprofessional for a journal like bmj to get their information from lobby groups. What happened to referring to properly documented statistics from a reputable or peer reviewed source?

OP posts:
womensvoicesmatter · 09/08/2018 19:36

I am so angry with the BMJ for giving further legitimacy to this damaging and bonkers group.

Since when was anecdata suitable for the BMJ?!

How can we complain about this? Does anyone know?

Cigarstring · 09/08/2018 19:40

I think I might write a letter to bmj. May I quote those sources you mentioned? This is getting ludicrous now. I thought at least science would be on the side of reason in this matter.

It's a feature, written by this journalist:

Ingrid Torjessen

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 09/08/2018 19:42

Mental health services IN GENERAL have been absolutely massacred - this is not a Trans issue (although according to the lobbyists bloody everything is a Trans issue)

Be interesting (and heartbreaking) to see what the statistics for women with PND attempting suicide are....

theOtherPamAyres · 09/08/2018 19:44

It's a self-serving and very narrow view, isn't it?

Making a case for more staff, more training and more services directed at your particular specialism, is one thing. Asking searching ethical questions about lifetime prescriptions for hormones, funded by the taxpayer, is another.

Is the rise in transgender people in GPs surgeries seen in countries where medical care is not free at the point of service?

womensvoicesmatter · 09/08/2018 19:49

Cigarstring, yes, please do! :)

It might be a good idea to read up on ATH Director Jess Bradley, who's just been suspended as NUS trans officer. The NUS's investigation hasn't been concluded, so it's just alleged (although JB hasn't denied it) - but these threads (there's lots of info here!) are illuminating about ATH in places. This is the first of three threads:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3320513-Jess-Bradley-first-transgender-student-officer-suspended-after-flashing-photos

There's also this Times article about ATH which confirms JB was a Director of ATH www.thetimes.co.uk/article/action-for-trans-health-activists-want-free-sex-change-hormones-for-children-dhvv5c52v

Cigarstring · 09/08/2018 19:51

Thankyou. Have found that they take letters by email. I can't read the whole article (anyone got access).

Yes, it's massive in the US, where there are huge funds going into lobbying for the trans to be demedicalised (making it easier to prescribe without a diagnosis and harder to sue Drs).

Planned Parenthood are (according to a MNer who spoke to them) advertising their services via FB ads - they practice affirmation - meaning they simply believe a teen when they say they're trans rather than asking questions to establish whether their wish to change sex might be, for example, as a result of trying to escape abuse or a manifestation of self harm.

They also appear to be letting 14 and 15 year olds self-diagnose and, the people prescribing them cross sex hormones won't be fully qualified doctors.

I bet the phama industry are rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of anything like 1 in 50.

womanspeaking · 09/08/2018 19:55

Ironically the Times reported this today about the lack of treatment for children with eating disorders:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/children-with-eating-disorders-face-long-waits-for-treatment-pwwktz83q?shareToken=48ee9e53849fb64d790e42200618bc0f

Idly wonders whether the BMJ have found the time to be concerned about children - then dismisses the idea

womensvoicesmatter · 09/08/2018 19:56

The (very long, but worth it!) article linked from this thread, and the thread itself are key to understanding what's going on in the States / the medical industry IMO.

Do you think there is enough money in servicing the trans industry to explain why the govt. is so blasé. Is that why they want to be trans capital? Will it replace the merchant bankers?
