Pride protests - Summary of the year so far

This article provides a summary of some of the Pride protests by lesbians up to June.

wlrnmedia.wordpress.com/2018/06/26/dykes-take-pride/

Since then there has been Brighton (un-transing Storme DeLarverie):

and Liverpool (which I heard about from a friend who was there, although I haven't seen any pictures on social media).

Inspiring women and incredibly brave - I wish I had the courage to protest at my local Pride Sad. Unfortunately, the 'queer' community is the place I feel least safe these days even though the organisations, bars and areas I'm talking about were the ones that I once considered to be 'my community' for many years.

I was reading this thread ( www.reddit.com/r/truelesbians/comments/92n3ru/is_being_a_lesbian_harder_socially_nowadays_than/ ) and the following comment chimes so well with my experience:

I think it has gotten a lot easier in the straight world to be a lesbian but more difficult to be a lesbian in the gay world.

Indeed. I don't think lesbians were ever really welcome in 'gay world', however.

Another one today! Vancouver Dyke March:

Is it true that the Leeds Pride had Trans people at the front?

Turph · 05/08/2018 23:33

SanctimoniousMorph that thread is really sad

Yes, a lot of the gay men treated us like crap but we at least used to be able to have women-only groups/spaces (however limited!) and to be able to name what was going on. Sad It's amazing how many gay men who never gave a shit about lesbians suddenly care passionately about the "new lesbians". Whether it's because they have d**ks or whether it's just because they enjoy seeing lesbians getting pushed (further) to one side, I don't know.

Yes young trans people lead the parade and the support for them was amazing. also the number of l with the t and other signs was over whelming. also the lesbians looked to be very much part of pride in Leeds. if you think a small number speak for a whole community you should have been there to see there response to that

vaginafetishist · 06/08/2018 15:38

Liverpool? I would love to know more. I thought they had gone full tra.

CholloDeNombre · 06/08/2018 15:41

There is resistance in Liverpool.

Can I ask a question and I hope I don't offend. I am straight but am utterly horrified by the lesbian erasure and proposed removal of women's rights.

My city have their Pride in a few weeks and I would like to make some sort of protest - likely just a sign.

Would this be offensive as I am not a lesbian myself? I know I could make this about women's rights and biology but it is the silencing of lesbians and what feels like the utter eradication of this side of the gay community which I think needs shouting about more and Pride seems to be the place to do this?

Or am I on a hiding to nothing and the gay community would consider me an interloper and 'virtue signalling?

vaginafetishist · 06/08/2018 20:01

Well done Liverpool!

SanctimoniousMorph · 06/08/2018 21:02

Bespin It's amazing how many "queer" women have started identifying as lesbians since the London Pride protest just so that they can say that they are lesbians and they love d**k so what's the problem? If they are attracted to people with penises, they are not lesbians.

SanFranBear What kind of sign were you thinking of? I think you would definitely encounter hostility - but from the "queers" and the transactivists - as have the lesbians who have protested. Some of the protesters have gone for a slightly more subtle approach e.g. the Liverpool protest (with the same-sex attracted sign) and the Brighton one with the sign about Storme DeLarverie being a butch lesbian. Everyone who is in the know about these issues knows the meaning of these signs (ie same sex attracted as opposed to same gender-attracted and the erasing of lesbian history by claiming the Storme was a transmen) but it's difficult for the transactivists to openly say, for example, that same sex attraction is wrong at a Pride event.

I really liked the 'Woman is not a feeling' from the link but I think that would be far too controversial?

The 'Lesbian is a female homosexual' from London pride was what peak-transed me as I could not for the life of me see what was anti-trans about that statement so did some digging and I have literally been Shock ever since.

They've tightened up the parade in the last year - it used to be just 'join in' but last year, all the corporate sponsorship was front and centre. I expect I would barely be noticed but I guess you never know? It's quite a 'young' event in that it was only reinstated a few years back after 15 years of nothing. I'm just unsure if its even a wise idea given that it doesn't impact me (lesbian erasure that is - the infringement of women's rights very much does but not sure Pride is the place for me to shout a pit that?)

SanFranBear · 06/08/2018 21:58

*about, even!

I don't think the TRAs will care which of those slogans you use - they will see both as equally transphobic.

SanFranBear · 06/08/2018 22:20

Oh, I know. I wouldn't use either tbh..

I'm really in two minds whether to even go but I want to show my support for the LGB part of the community as when I first moved to the city, I was completely taken under their wing due to knowing hardly anyone. It's such a welcoming scene - or at least it was. Since DC, I haven't been able to really go out (single parent) and a lot of my friends have settled down themselves.

SanctimoniousMorph · 06/08/2018 23:10

Brighton and Hove (L)GBT asked lesbians to make a short video supporting transactivism and denying lesbian erasure. That went well....
