Charities and their activities

Registered Charities (in England and Wales, links for Scotland and Northern Ireland are below) all have their activities and objects, their powers listed here

apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/showcharity/registerofcharities/RegisterHomePage.aspx

This page explains that you should make complaints directly to charities, and contact the regulator if you are unhappy with how they have dealt with your complaint.

www.gov.uk/complain-about-charity

It also explains that serious concerns should be “reported to the Charity Commission, for example if a charity is:

  • not doing what it claims to do
  • losing lots of money
  • harming people
  • being used for personal profit or gain
  • involved in illegal activity”

Does anyone want to suggest a charity as a case study that we look at to see if there are any areas of inconsistency that may require some further clarification...

Girl Guiding UK.

They advertise themselves as a single sex organisation. Something they can do with the protection of the Equality Act.

But they now take boys who identify as girls, but not girls who identify as boys.

Therefore they are no longer a single sex organisation.

I second GG

And the Freemasons. They now say they will allow men who identify as women to remain members, but won't admit women who identify as men.

Not sure if they are a charity though.

Might be interesting to cross-reference what changes were made to the governing documents in recent years

Hostelling Scotland (formerly SYHA).

They claim to offer sex segregated accommodation but a Man Friday campaigner managed to secure accommodation in the male dormitory by saying she identified as a man.

Either these charities want to use the EA's provision for sex segregated spaces as a "proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim" or they have to openly advertise the fact they no longer offer sex segregated spaces.
