Well done once again to the Times. I have got so much out of my subscription.
The story is terrifying, those poor women.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 02/08/2018 18:29

This makes me feel sick - those poor girls. It’s horrifying that they sought help and it was ignored!

womanspeaking · 02/08/2018 18:40

Another one who is thankful for my Times subscription. Their investigative journalism is first rate and their coverage of women's issues is good - despite some of the anti women comments under the line.

thebewilderness · 02/08/2018 19:53

I have been reading for years the pleas for help from girls born here who were being forcibly taken back to their parents home country to be sold into marriage to a stranger.
I am glad that it is finally being publicized, but at the same time I want to scream at them for pretending this is new news.

Ereshkigal · 02/08/2018 20:07

Big vote of thanks to the Times for covering this - you're worth the money for my subscription.

Yes. It is money well spent. I enjoy my Times subscription.

I am waiting for someone to come on and say that men have forced marriages too and it's always wrong why make it about male/ female. NothingOnTellyAgain It does happen to men a lot! There are so many forgotten brides and their children in India. Promised a visa, promised that they will be brought over but instead they are just holiday wives with no rights at all. That's the scandal the other way round. You will see that in the Indian etc. newspapers.

bonitabonita · 02/08/2018 20:20

This has been a HUGE problem for over 20 years. I was cautioned by the police for removing a 17yr year old girl from her 'husband' in Bradford City Centre in 1999. He was beating her so I intervened and took her to the police station in my car. She was terrified and couldn't/wouldn't make a statement but had a bloody nose, a swollen eye and was obviously beaten. The police took me into custody for 'kidnapping' and took her back to him, then cautioned me.

I often wonder how things turned out for her. I hope she became stronger and escaped. I was very young then, today I would call woman's aid or take her to a refuge so I feel terrible guilt for my poor choice of intervention.

thebewilderness · 02/08/2018 20:30

Do people really not get that the "gold digger" concept was pure projection on the part of men?

BonnieF · 02/08/2018 21:02

Exactly Fermat.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. We all knew the background of the men involved in this outrageous scandal before we even read the articles, didn’t we?

The same background as the abusers in Rotherham.
The same background as the abusers in Rochdale.
The same background as the abusers in Derby.
The same background as the abusers in Telford.
The same background as the abusers in Cologne.

The PC left don’t give a damn about women. We are always the first to be thrown under the bus in order to protect the left’s special, precious, protected, sanctified minority.

Thanks Erroll - I was about to ask if anyone had any campaigning ideas and suggest writing to Javid.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 03/08/2018 07:39

The Times was I think the first paper to raise the abuse in Rotherham, etc. They were shouted down as ‘racist’. I expect there will be same said about this. I fail to understand why this is allowed, this kind of abuse is linked to the grooming issue in one of the reports as it just allows more predators into the country.

The country needs less hysteria about ‘racism’ and more people grasping the real issues and doing something about it

ifonlyus · 03/08/2018 08:10

This is awful. And it would seem that those who even make a call to request the visa be stopped are just a minority. Many others don't have the knowledge or the courage to even do that.

I don't know what to say or do either. The law seems to be shit in this area. Can we just start from a position of assumption that the majority, perhaps 100%, of teenage girls, do not want to be forced to marry and a high percentage (all?) that take place abroad to strangers, are likely to be against their will? Or am I wrong in my assumption?

womanspeaking · 03/08/2018 08:29

It's a real challenge stopping this as so many girls are taken abroad during holidays under the pretext of a holiday. Today's articles about the rape and abuse of girls with special needs are heartbreaking.

ISeeTheRainIsBack · 03/08/2018 09:50

Erroll I thought I couldn't be shocked any more but the case of that poor woman..

In the United Kingdom for "authorities" to stand by and wash their hands is appalling.

PencilTroll · 03/08/2018 10:24

It's worse than that, they aren't often strangers but more likely a relative. The Times story says the disabled woman was forced to marry close relatives on both mother's and father's side and others are regularly sold off to the highest bidding relative who fancies moving to the UK.
Delightful.

KittyKlaws · 03/08/2018 13:23

It seems like it is often the families arranging this so there is no help from within the family. It is difficult to see how to help initially as this can be done during a seemingly normal family holiday or visiting relatives. If authorities are aware of this practice they should be doing more to stamp it out.

I'm beginning to wonder if we have to go back to grassroots of refuges where women take other women under their wing and help them not just from physical violence but from circumstances like this. I feel like we should get organised here to let the authorities know we aren't happy about how these women are being treated now that the story has broken.

The more bitter side of me thinks that this demonstrates exactly what those in charge really think about women - like we are property to be loaned out or bid upon.

I think I'm going to look further into this.

I cannot believe you were cautioned for this - well I can - but the fact your were is an outrage and it demonstrates whose side the authorities are on.
