A thought on turning tides.

I'm seeing a lot of comments here and elsewhere that reference the turning tide, as more light is shone on this whole unsavoury Transactivism movement.

I know that wherever I have raised these issues in face to face conversation, there has been a brief moment of confusion, and then a lightbulb moment where the ridiculousness of scrubbing out safeguarding across the board and pretending black is white is clearly seen.

It's heartening to be reminded that people are generally decent sorts who can come to rational conclusions when presented with calm, reasoned explanation. I don't want to take away from that optimism, because God knows we've had enough of the depressing and scary.

But remember that tides turn with amazing regularity, and that so much of what women have built in the last century or so in the West is always teetering on the edge of a particularly jagged rock formation.

It's really important to remember cases like Iran, to look at the pictures of women pre-revolution, and see ourselves there, and take nothing, nothing for granted. If we're seeing the tide begin to turn now, it's because of the tenacious work of women who have seen the dangers ahead and sounded the alarm - but also because certain influencers are trying to read a public mood to see which way they will jump.

It's by no means a given that the tide will continue to ebb out - it could just as easily come crashing back in and swamp everything we think we've gained.

If I've learned anything in my life, it's that yes, people are often good and fair minded sorts - but there are a sizeable proportion of them that are twisted up and nasty to the core, and if you don't remember that many of those people gravitate to power and influence, you will end up hugely disillusioned with the whole show.

So, keep hope alive, for sure. The dream of human progression is a noble one. But remember that actual history shows us clearly that it is every bit as possible to devolve as it is to improve.

Agreed. This is the time to do as much activism as possible to take advantage of the shift in public opinion (mostly a result of the public actually realizing what's been happening), not the time to be complacent.

I am glad you've posted this.
Thank you, OP, I certainly agree. I think it's good to have optimism at what seems like a gradual return of common sense. However, the battle is far from over. I think the most vicious TRAs will get worse as the subject gets questioned more. We know they hate it when anyone challenges trans ideology. We can't become complacent, there is every chance the government could steamroll these changes through.
Organisations like WPUK, FairPlay for Women and ManFriday are doing incredible work, as are the gender-critical supporters in the media and academia. THANK YOU to each and every one of them, as well as all the Mumsnetters/twitterers/facebookers/youtubers/etc.
In my humble opinion we cannot get complacent. We must remain vigilant, try to be courteous, open to dialogue and try to look out for the best, most pragmatic solutions for females, as well our transsexual allies in this fight against self-ID.

And also, I've been saying for a while that in terms of the behavior from TRAs it will get worse before it gets better. Narcissistic injury is a sight to behold, and we're going to see a lot of it as it starts to dawn on some people that they may not get what they want and they look for someone to blame. Be careful out there.

Yes. Well said

Absolutely this. It is escalating. I've just spent a couple of hours spying on TRA Twitter. They hate non compliant women so much and the narcissistic rage is growing.

Agastache · 01/08/2018 08:46

I don't do anything on twitter any more than point out the biology and the male rage which just proves that men are too dangerous to be in women's spaces and let them fly - and they all do.

Apart from a specific doctor, who just blocked me. Yeah - no arguments against that eh?

FloralBunting · 01/08/2018 10:25

Thanks for the replies - complacency is the danger, isn't it? We really need to not underestimate the determination of some people to put women collectively in their place, and the naked contempt for us which is driving the whole thing.

You're right Floral.
There are real dangers to women from some TRAs. My hope is that as the direct threats to children and women become more evident as people are exposed, it will become acceptable to state that men (or women!) with penises should not be in changing rooms with 12 year old girls. I think we're closer but not there yet. Sigh...

Things are slowly starting to shift. My MP, who has been studiously ignoring all three of my emails to him since November, has suddenly and out of the blue answered saying my points are valid, he will attend the debates on this and see that my views are heard.

I don't know what suddenly made him find my mails and answer them, but I would suspect one of the news stories this week has caught his eye or someone's eye and sparked conversation.
