MP's report concludes that "says the delivery of aid to people had been subverted by sexual predators."

They found sexual assault and exploitation was "predominately perpetrated against women and girls" and mainly carried out by men.

You don't say!

7.A failure to listen to and consider the needs of victims and survivors of SEA, will engender a response that is not only ineffective, but potentially harmful. Victims and survivors should demonstrably be front and centre of all efforts to tackle SEA and this means the inclusion of victim and survivor voices in policy-making processes on an ongoing basis.

QuarksandLeptons · 31/07/2018 23:01

The report recommends an international criminal check on people working abroad for charities - I’m very shocked that this is t the case already!

"Voices from Syria, 2018 (Whole of Syria GBV Focal Point, UNFPA)
Within this annual report on gender-based violence (GBV) in Syria it was clear that sexual exploitation and abuse by aid workers, amongst others, is an entrenched feature of the life experience of women and girls in Syria in the eighth year of the conflict there. "

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt welcomed the report, saying: "Until the sector is fully prepared to address the power imbalance, cultures, and behaviours that allow sexual abuse, exploitation and harassment to happen, we will never stamp it out."

Yes Penny. So don't adopt a programme of reducing/diluting/ignoring safeguarding measures here, because it will come back to bite you and this will be remembered.

THIS.

It's important to consider our current safeguarding landscape in the UK and how this is being challenged.

But can we spare a thought for international women and child victims of sexual exploitation by aid workers on this thread?

What made me irate in all the coverage is that the problem keeps being referred to as a ‘charity sector’ problem. It isn’t. It’s not the women working for charities who are doing this, is it? (I realise some may be helping the cover ups). The perps are men. This is a male problem.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 01/08/2018 08:25

And yes to PP of course the anger all stems from sympathy for the exploited people here - as ever, it’s women and children.

SweetGrapes · 01/08/2018 08:30

As ever, biology not gender feelz is the source of opression. Another one shoxked that there are no criminal checks. Talk about laying out the red carpet.

SweetGrapes · 01/08/2018 08:30

Sorry about the typos....

womanspeaking · 01/08/2018 08:35

It's incredible how little attention is paid to safeguarding of the vulnerable. I believed that as a society we were shit hot - understanding, policies, reviews etc. In reality we have allowed men at all levels of organisations to use and abuse. And so it continues.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/08/2018 08:45

Sex scandal is an appalling name to put to this.

Sexual abuse scandal or similar would be better.

Sex scandal ffs.

Haven't even read it yet but have read comments on here, a few years ago (before these recent news articles) someone said maybe all front line people should be women. Would never happen but the more I hear the more I think that's a great idea. Of course some responses are women do it too which is nonsense but anyway, it couldn't be any worse really could it.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/08/2018 08:47

That comment years ago was made about peace keeping forces after news of sexual atrocities came out.

Angryresister · 01/08/2018 08:58

Well if amnesty says that sex work is work, why would anyone not believe they are helping women by abusing them? NO it is not the women on the front line doing this. Apalled at the years of cover up.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/08/2018 09:12

That was a common comment (mainly from men but some women) BTL when the haiti story came out.

That these men were helping by providing employment and they hadn't seen it reported that any of the women were underage.

And that in fact going to a posh house with food etc might be a nice break for them.

Libfems/ choicefems have such a lot to answer for.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/08/2018 09:14

Also these men saying they hadn't seen it reported that any were underage

Ha ha ha fucking ha you stupid bastards, I mean its way more of a stretch to imagine they weren't intetested in under 18s, come off it.

LangCleg · 01/08/2018 09:19

Does anybody know of local, reputable charities (preferably woman led) we can direct our donations to? There was one talked about ages ago that feminists were recommending but I can't remember it.

I've cancelled all my corporate charity direct debits and am just giving to the Against Malaria Foundation as it's the top one here: https//www.givingwhatwecan.org/giving-recommendations/

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/08/2018 09:21

Women KNOW what men are like, a too large minority of them. We KNOW that there are squillions of men that are sexually attracted to girls from puberty up, irrespective of their physical age. Hell, you always get men smugly saying it's "natural" for men to want girls as soon as their bodies start developing, that men can't help it etc.

Then something like this happens and it's all oh what good men giving them work + what a treat for the girls + no suggestion any under age. You fucking liars.

These stories are appalling and yet again many men seem to be unable to really grasp what's so bad. A combo of misogyny, racism, protecting men "like them"- men who are "good" and also a total inability to understand the horror of being in such a vulnerable position with someone much bigger, stronger, and more powerful than you in all ways, who is almost certainly going to hurt you a bit, maybe a lot, it's up to him and his friends, and there's nothing you can do about it.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/08/2018 09:25

Fistula foundation was one I used to support.

Ages ago there was an idea in FWR to do a charity a week where posters could flag/ suggest charities that they knew of - more grassroots/ genuinely women centred ones. Maybe time to revive that idea? It didn't get off the ground first time round.
