Teenage boys to receive HPV vaccine

Finally! It is now recognised that boys need this vaccine too.

www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jul/24/boys-vaccinated-against-hpv-cancer-england

'HPV has emerged as the leading cause of throat cancers and is linked to 5% of all cancers worldwide, including some that affect only men.'

That would be penile cancer. Cancer of the penis.

Brilliant! We’ve already paid to have DS vaccinated but I’m so glad other families won’t have to find the spare cash to do so.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 24/07/2018 18:12

Great news for a variety of reasons :)

FermatsTheorem · 24/07/2018 18:24

Good! So pleased to hear this. It makes so much sense, both from the point of view of boys and men, and from the point of view of building up "herd immunity" in the whole population. My DS will be getting his when he's old enough.

OvaHere · 24/07/2018 18:26

Really good news.

Ethelswith · 24/07/2018 18:33

I'll still have to pay for DS - the roll out is for age 13 and under, and no sign of a catch up for slightly older teens.

So not a perfect result for me, but a great step for the herd

cloudtree · 24/07/2018 18:38

This should hopefully be implemented in time for DS2 and we will pay for DS1 who is already 13. Really good outcome.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 24/07/2018 18:47

This is good news.

Italiangreyhound · 24/07/2018 19:49

Great. Very pleased.

Atthebottomofthesea · 24/07/2018 19:55

Great news. I recently signed the permission for my dd to have it. And I am pleased that ds will be offered it in due course.

HabbyHadno · 24/07/2018 19:57

Amazing!

Bowlofbabelfish · 24/07/2018 19:58

Excellent. Both sexes need this jab - looking forward to seeing the drop in cancer rates in a decade or two from this. Was crazy to only give it to girls - all young people should have the option.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 24/07/2018 23:04

This is brilliant. I hope Scotland does the same.

UpstartCrow · 24/07/2018 23:10

That is good news!

dahliaaa · 24/07/2018 23:22

Is anyone with older teens planning to pay for them to have the vaccination ? Mine will be too old to get it on nhs

ChattyLion · 25/07/2018 00:15

This is great news. Smile

cloudtree · 25/07/2018 05:20

dahliaaa we will definitely be paying for Ds1. We'd already planned on it but were waiting to see whether he'd be covered. He's 13 already though so likely to be too old.

noeffingidea · 25/07/2018 06:57

Good news. The whole population should be protected, not just women and hetrosexual men.

placemats · 25/07/2018 07:07

The vaccine is for all teenage boys.

OP posts:
Ethelswith · 25/07/2018 07:09

Yes, I will be paying. As I'm slightly grimacing at the cost, I had been hanging on hoping that he might be included. But as he's just reached the age that needs 3 shots not 2, I had rather expected that he wouldn't be done on NHS.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 25/07/2018 19:15

Scotland announced last week that they were rolling it out to boys. The English announcement actually came later. Just NI we’re waiting on now. (Pretty sure Wales is covered under the announcement noted in the OP) Scottish gov haven’t given a timeframe yet just saying that they will roll it out as soon as is practically possible.

There is still a shortage of the vaccine (for instance Boots are not taking new bookings at present due to the current shortage and only fulfilling vaccines for those who have already started their course of either 2 or 3 jabs) and there have been shortages in the recent past too (we were on a waiting list in Boots and were lucky to get in when we did) so I’m guessing it might take a while to get stocks up before they can actually roll it out

My children are all fully immmunised but we would not give them this particular vaccine after reading Dr David Healy’s work on this subject. If you don’t know his work- he takes the raw data from drug company trials, and crunches the data with his team then collates his own findings and publishes. He has had one liscenced (in the U.K. and other countries.) medication for depression withdrawn after the data actually proved the drug made depression worse and induced suicidal thoughts. I’ve never been an anti vac advocate and neither will I be in the future but there are harms with this vaccine that need to be addressed properly and publicly before I would give it to my kids.

dahliaaa · 25/07/2018 23:52

I don't think all teenagers will get it will they placemats?
(I think it's just up to a certain age.)

TreaterAnita · 26/07/2018 00:22

@Crazy3 - Dr Healy appears to be a psychiatrist so qualified to talk about the licensing of ADs but less so immunisations. Also, you’d think he might have noted that conditions like CFS, POTS etc often show onset in teenage years (with subsequent recovery in a lot of cases) and did so before the HPV vaccine was introduced. Sounds v Wakefield-esque IMHO.

Personally I’m delighted by the news having assumed that I’d have to fork out for my son to have it - the die was cast for me when an eminent ENT surgeon who I know professionally said he had paid for his teen boys to have it.

MrsEricBana · 26/07/2018 00:35

I am delighted too. Every healthcare person I know personally has paid for their sons to have the HPV jab and advised us to have it done so we paid for the 3 jab course for ds last year. (Also Men B jab as wasn't given to babies when mine were small).
