15-yr-old Indonesia girl jailed for abortion after being raped by brother

15-year-old was sentenced to six months for aborting a foetus which was older than the six-week limit allowed after rape.
Her mother, who helped her, is also facing charges

Yet another example of the specific type of violence that only women & girls can suffer and only men or boys can commit
with the additional injustice that the victim is punished by a patriarchal society for her suffering.

It is truly shocking. I hope that the appeal mentioned to increase the sentence for her doesn't happen. Poor child.

LassWiADelicateAir · 21/07/2018 21:23

Prosecutors had originally asked that the girl be jailed for a year and her brother for seven. They say they may still appeal the decision.

I would be happy for them to appeal one of those decisions.

AssassinatedBeauty · 21/07/2018 21:52

Quite. But it seems like it might be both or neither being appealed, rather than just the brother's sentence being looked at.

I find it disturbing that any culture could view a child victim of rape (and incestuous rape in this case) as a criminal.

AngryAttackKittens · 21/07/2018 21:56

And her mother too, for deciding that maybe being forced to bear a child while still a child herself as a result of being raped wasn't in her daughter's best interests.

I agree @LassWiADelicateAir

enoughisenough12 · 21/07/2018 22:16

Such a depressing story. There are so many awful stories of what is happening to girls and women around the world - it really doesn't ever seem to improve.

Carecomplet · 22/07/2018 00:31

Is there a petition for this anywhere? Are Amnesty campaigning? Disgraceful situation. I feel so sorry for this poor girl and only hope that the media spotlight will mean that she is pardoned or something.

LassWiADelicateAir · 22/07/2018 01:10

Had a look but I can't find any campaigns.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/07/2018 10:54

A petition might help this young girl
but we also need to prevent future similar victims

i.e. bring pressure on countries which have laws that criminalise rape victims,
whether directly - for being no longer "pure" / dishonouring family or tribe / committing "adultery" etc -
or indirectly, such as criminalising a consequent abortion

My god.
That poor child.
Females just exist to be used for men.
Not to use themselves as they see fit.

"Abortions account for between 30% and 50% of maternal deaths in the country, according to a 2013 World Health Organisation report."

I can hardly comprehend. Half of all maternal deaths because of unsafe abortions.

I'm maxed out on how much hatred there is of females in the world right now.

SpareRibFem · 22/07/2018 17:38

It's appalling Sad

There's so many countries that punish girls and women instead of the men (at least in this case the rapist isn't getting away with it but often they do).

A six week limit for abortion is ridiculous.

JellySlice · 23/07/2018 00:07

“The girl was charged under the child protection law for having an abortion,” he said.

Beggars belief.

A child is charged, criminalised and penalised under the very law that is supposed to be there to protect her. Meanwhile the abuser is - presumably - also charged under that law, having committed multiple, serious crimes against a child, and receives a sentence that in no way reflects the appalling things he has done.

LaSquirrel · 23/07/2018 11:50

I assume that abortion is effectively 'illegal', with all sorts of barriers to obtain one there, a primarily Islamic country.

They seem more cut up about it being a male foetus (typical). And they probably don't have too much of a problem with incest either (in Pakistan it is common for cousins to marry, and keep doing that frequently enough, then birth defects happen with regularity). I doubt that they would automatically believe any woman/girl that said she was raped, she likely would have to have 'male witnesses' to prove she was raped. Very much a no-win for women/girls living in circumstances like this.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/07/2018 12:43

Child protection in some countries, including increasingly the US,
concentrates on foetus protection,
then abandons the child - especially the female child - as soon as it is born
