BBC R4 Thursday - Sweet Reason discusses 'The Patriarchy'

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b9z645

Are the BBC atoning for their unquestioning broadcast of PR material about 4 year olds changing sex?

Will this be any good - or will it just end with 'oh well everything is changing' anyway, in a John Humphries sort of way?

Hmm will be interesting

Melamin · 18/07/2018 08:47

It was sign posted as covering identity politics, gender, etc, and whether anyone will listen to reason - most programmes on this so far have been shallow and miss the point - we'll see.

Im looking forward to finding out about how all that is going to be approached by woman's hour in the autumn.

Melamin · 18/07/2018 09:16

Are woman's hour actually going to broadcast something?

It would be strange if they didn't. It's the greatest loss of human rights for women in the UK in the last 100 years. Especially for many BAME women.

dinodora · 18/07/2018 09:23

I believe they've asked for people to contact them for contributions.

I do think mn fwr posters perhaps could do this.

I must admit I'm not v eloquent and very tied up with new baby myself!

AbsintheFriends · 18/07/2018 09:32

When the issue was briefly touched on recently on WH, Jane Garvey definitely sounded quite curtly GC (though I don't want to get my hopes up.) I noticed the other day that Jenni Murray's name is prominent on the Fair Play for Women site, so I imagine that they're going to have to be very careful when handling this. You can just picture the conversations that must have been going on behind the scenes at the BBC...

SquishySquirmy · 18/07/2018 12:12

I got the impression that Women's Hour aren't allowed to talk about this issue in an in-depth way. The main presenters don't have complete freedom over the content of the show do they?

I am becoming increasingly convinced that men are "allowed" to say controversial things in a way that women aren't.

SquishySquirmy · 18/07/2018 12:16

Also, the trailers I've heard for the program haven't been concerned with Transgender issues; they've been about whether or not its fair to blame "the Patriarchy" for things.

eg, men who are brave enough to explain how feminists get it wrong, and whether its all in our heads.....

dinodora · 18/07/2018 12:16

Just re found the women's hour prog regarding this on 3rd July.

*"In the autumn women's hour are going to be looking in greater detail at sex and gender."

They'd like to know thoughts on:

  • "why more born females decide to identify as male"
  • "is your safety at risk because you were born a woman or because you identify as one"
  • if you are a lesbian, trans woman, non binary or have any experience in this area please email the website; they will be combined in a series of features and articles in the autumn.*

I think there's quite a few things been confused and mixed up there.

I may make a separate post on this.

SquishySquirmy · 18/07/2018 12:18

eg this: In this edition Evan Davis and guests discuss whether the term patriarchy has had its day or is it still a useful way of seeing gender imbalances.

Many on here would disagree with the way the discussion is being framed to begin with, as it starts with the premise that imbalances are due to gender rather than sex.

dinodora · 18/07/2018 12:20

The BBC's Adina Campbell was the reporter informing WH about the GRC changes on the 3rd July broadcast. I wonder if this is her 'area'?

AncientLights · 18/07/2018 17:30

My daughter works for the BBC in London. God knows what diversity training has gone on there. All horribly 'woke'

Pratchet · 18/07/2018 18:51

All About Trans has been having 'interactions' with staff, including senior editorial policy executives, since at least 2013. Evan went to one. Transactivists have dominated the way the Bbc covers the issue.

@Melamin Would you consider asking MN to ammend the title of the thread so that it includes the title of the program 'Patriachy'?

I think the program would be of interest to many on the board and they may miss this thread.

Melamin · 19/07/2018 09:42

I have asked them to amend the title.

It was a very interesting programme - I will go back and listen again.

It did not seem to be discussing what they said yesterday, on the Today trailer though.

Hi @Melamin - we've amended the title for you now.

R0wantrees · 19/07/2018 09:53

Thanks so much for sharing it.
I thought it was really interesting & I'm going to listen to it again later.

Melamin · 19/07/2018 10:00

Thank you Dawn - that was quick Smile

R0wantrees · 19/07/2018 10:04

thanks both Smile

FlorenceLyons · 19/07/2018 10:33

Hmmm - the use of the word 'hysterical' in the first sentence of the BBC's description of the programme is a little ironic...

Melamin · 19/07/2018 11:01

Yes, the word hysterical still exists and is still frequently used in the same way Hmm
