Transgender woman sues for employment discrimination but the BBC focuses on their appearance

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44847564

In relation to a legal case relating to workplace discrimination, the BBC journalist thinks it’s important to tell us how the transgender woman at the heart of the case prepares for work.
‘She puts on eyeliner, mascara and nail polish, and picks a pair of flat shoes from a sparkling range, which includes diamante wedges and six-inch heels.’
He also tells us that ’Hayley is not the kind of person most people would envisage driving a commercial van.’

WTF? Is the BBC not aware that many women drive vans and do manual labour? And funnily enough some of them might put on a bit of lippy to go to work. Is that really worth reporting? And is the journalist implying that women van drivers who don’t get dolled up for work are doing womenhood wrongly?

Classic example right there of how the Trans movement is reinforcing sexist stereotypes, supported by the media.

I assume the journalist thought all that information about their appearance was relevant to show how this person is definitely a woman. And all it does is reduce 'woman' to feminine clothes, make up etc. Depressing isn't it?

As a woman I can say the only time I’ve ever worn makeup was when I was in the panto as a child.

Yambabe · 17/07/2018 12:55

But that tends to be how they report on women too.

I would say that is the media reinforcing sexist stereotypes rather than the trans movement, the trans part just gives them an angle for it.

Yes I was really frustrated by this story. That whole paragraph seemed to be everyday sexism and completely irrelevant to the legal case.

And yes, @Ireneony it’s the idea that femaleness is about the makeup and clothes.

@Yambabe you are of course correct and I think this is what is most disturbing. The report indicating that because the complainant was clearly performing womanhood correctly, this case is somehow more wrong - and implying that it would be ok to discriminate against any woman who doesn’t perform femininity in the proscribed way.

What's weird is that they've mentioned the word transgender at all. Surely the person would just want to sue their employer for regular sexism, since "transwomen are women" and all that?

In which case why mention it? They don't in articles about murderers who've transitioned.

And yes - what do they mean "not the kind of person you'd expect to drive a van"?

redshoeblueshoe · 17/07/2018 13:31

So the ramming of the roller shutter doors with a loaded pallet truck, caught on CCTV was less important than Hayley's shoe collection.

I have never worn make up to work in my life. So I'm doing woman wrong

redshoeblueshoe · 17/07/2018 13:33

Actually surely transwomen want to be bullied in the work place, so they can say they are being treated the same as natal women Grin

Ireneony · 17/07/2018 13:42

The media have always reinforced sexist stereotypes and trans ideology is indoctrinating it as fact. More of a fact than actual biology. Being a woman is just about how well you perform femininity.

DieAntword · 17/07/2018 15:20

And yes - what do they mean "not the kind of person you'd expect to drive a van"?

Well in Royston Vasey it was a taxi wasn't it.
