Summer reading challenge data collection

I signed DC up for the summer reading challenge today. Aimed at 4-11 year olds.

On the form (which DC completed themselves) was a question, or rather not even a question, just an option where you had to circle either M/F/NB.

Just, why? Why do they even need this data? And does non binary even need to be an option for 4-11 year olds?

Oh. I am not going to be able to give that back unaltered. This is the library thing right? Perhaps there's a book about sex in the library that could help. Or do they mean gender not sex? Why on earth do they need to gather that data?

Believeitornot · 12/07/2018 20:45

You don’t have to provide the data

Imnobody4 · 12/07/2018 20:48

This is getting ridiculous, now. They do need to collect sex to monitor uptake, there's been a lot of concerns about boys reading. But non binary is just a gesture. Just thought how will they refer to them in the report boy, girl, ?

Yes, it’s the library thing.

I wonder how many people will know what NB is? Because that’s how it’s written, not as non binary. Could make for some interesting discussions with the librarians.

The Summer Reading Challenge is run across the whole country by the Reading Agency readingagency.org.uk/resources/

The Reading Agency will have told all the libraries what data they want them to collect.

So there's no point berating the local library staff!

Perhaps everyone will think it means “not bothered”?

Perhaps everyone will think it means “not bothered”?

😂 Gurl

I kinda hope so!

I like that ... I suspect Not Bothered is what lots will think - I would have done... one always used to have an option of Prefer not to say about lots of things so I suspect people will!

But laughter aside, NB for under 11s is frightening!

Strange - I filled this in for DS just the other day and the choices were Boy/Girl/Prefer not to say. I was glad because I did not have to negotiate a box which asked for ‘Gender’
