What an incredible achievement.

I couldn't have done that at 31, never mind 51 (and having had a hysterectomy and breast cancer).

She's the first person to run the "double Ramsey" - yes that's right, first person not "just" the first woman.

116 miles and just shy of 56 hours.

She's broken multiple Fell running records - why isn't she Dame Nicky?

Time to celebrate an amazing achievement by a female athlete!!!!

Unfortunately though, I don't think she would ever win SPOTY. Fell running simply isn't well known enough.... niche sports never get enough votes.

(She definitely deserves it though!)

SophoclesTheFox · 10/07/2018 16:52

wow! what a woman!

I love how ultra distance and endurance lets women shine Grin

enjoyingscience · 10/07/2018 16:53

People get called inspirational a lot, but this lady really is. I'm bowled over.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 16:54

So it looks like it's a special panel.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4Z5SvK744sgV419kxgJG929/terms-and-conditions

Looks like any lobbying would have to be done to the BBC.

Lots of people lobbying the England squad using @BBCSport on twitter

Suggest we start doing the same?

OP posts:
AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 16:56

Also #bbcspoty

And no, she likely wouldn't win but it would be great to see her nominated right?

Unless we want it to be awash with footballers...

Flippetydip · 10/07/2018 16:58

Start an "AIBU to ask you to lobby the BBC for Nicky Spinks" or something slightly more catchy - you'll get a lot more traffic, but yes for what it's worth, I totally agree - as someone who stops a lot when running I find this almost beyond comprehension!

pitterpatterrain · 10/07/2018 17:00

Amazing!!

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 17:00

Ok will brave AIBU - be good to get a few responses to bump from FWR :-)

LumpySpacedPrincess · 10/07/2018 17:02

WHAT a woman! What an achievement.

KimCheesePickle · 10/07/2018 17:03

Oh wow! I'm spluttering and collapsing after running for 56 seconds, never mind 56 hours Blush We should definitely campaign to raise her profile for sports personality.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 17:08

Nick Spinks - Fell Runner should be nominated for BBC SPOTYhttp://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/3302614-nick-spinks-fell-runner-should-be-nominated-for-bbc-spoty

Here you go on AIBU if you'd like to support the thread.

Seriously WOW!!!!!!!!!

Amazing and wonderful achievement - and SO demonstrates that ENDURANCE is a quality women can have in sport, alongside men...

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/07/2018 17:42

Amazing.
Thanks for sharing this.

OvaHere · 10/07/2018 18:21

Wow. Fantastic achievement.

I have a friend who does endurance events, she's done a few triathlons and is an absolute warrior. Every time we meet up I am seriously impressed at what she can do.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 19:06

Since I read the initial article I found some more.

She's on record as saying (specific to Fell running?) that after 20 miles the difference between the sexes lessens.

Angela Mudge en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Mudge is another inspiring female fell runner, often finishing in the top 10 overall in hill/ feel races with many men being "Mudged"

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 22:25

@2rebecca

Thanks for the link!

I'll look at that now :-)

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 23:49

Like a pp I've met some women from the farming community in Yorkshire and frankly they are the epitome of what's achievable as a woman.

Lambing and being awake for 48hrs plus - pah!

Doing that for the best part of 2 months (and checking in on the foundling you had to warm up in the aga and feed every hour).

Then going to work and raising a family and also doing some side business to keep a farm profitable....

Then just do some Fell running on a weekend to relax :-)

Women have stamina - we're in it for the long haul. And what a woman Nicky Spinks is! Phenomenal.

Makes you feel good, doesn't it Smile

dirtybadger · 11/07/2018 12:20

I only found out about Nicky after her double Bob-Graham. I really enjoyed watching it, and it made me want to eat chips and run a hill. A hill. Singular.

Anyone into the American ultra scene might have seen Courtney Dauwalter (outright winner of most recent MOAB 240) killing it again at the Western States 100 recently. Not quite into the top ten, but almost! So many inspiring women in the ultra community.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 11/07/2018 12:29

She's broken multiple Fell running records - why isn't she Dame Nicky?

Because fell running is an extremely niche sport.
Great achievement though, and great career.
Another great fell runner is Victoria Wilkison - won the Yorkshire Three Peaks race for the last three years.
FWIW Nicky Spinks came 12th this year.

PersonWithAVulva · 11/07/2018 12:58

Amazing achievement.

I cannot even run to the shop 5 mins away without feeling like I am going to die Blush

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 11/07/2018 13:44

This is absolutely phenomenal! Huge well done to Nicky. Running that far and for that long over a flat would be next to impossible for most people, but fell running? Completely inspirational! Star
