Recent uni email - removing titles from ID cards

Candolim97 · 05/07/2018 16:22

“I want to inform you that all (removed my uni’s name) Student ID cards issued from September won't have the Mr/Miss/Mrs/Ms title printed on them. Removing this personal information fits with the new data protection regulations (GDPR), and most importantly, it protects the trans community from being exposed should they not want to.”

I think that's great tbh

Beamur · 05/07/2018 16:24

Also means women don't have to define themselves by their married status. I'm ok with this personally.

G5000 · 05/07/2018 16:27

Sad nobody has cared unti now that women were forced to expose themselves as married/not married/bra-burning feminist harridan

TimeLady · 05/07/2018 16:30

I've been married for 41 years and hardly ever use the title Mrs. Always Forename Surname. I had a row with my bank some years ago when they insisted on printing Mrs on the joint account cheques, whereas my husband just had his initials. And another row when they wouldn't print my name first.

PeakPants · 05/07/2018 16:31

I am all for getting rid of titles. Totally and utterly irrelevant and meaningless in 2018 for women to be defined according to whether they are married. I think this is fantastic and I would want many other places to follow suit.

I think its a great idea and ive obviously got no problem if its been done to make some people's lives a smidge easier

But still...this ^^

Nettymummy · 05/07/2018 16:34

I like this idea too. In this era, what is the point of specify your sex in a title or even your martial status.
It's well overdue that it was removed from all official application forms. It serves no purpose other than a polite way of wording the letter by replacing the forename with the title. But most people are well used to being addressed by forename now.

Regarding not upsetting trans gender people, that's a different matter. I can't imagine a transgender person actually said "Having to chose a title upsets me. Can we exclude that from the card?"
They didn't. This preempts issues that don't exist. In reality, I'd imagine they would enjoy choosing the title of the gender they prefer to be seen as as it gives them another opportunity of recognition in their chosen gender role and the feel good factor that goes with it.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 05/07/2018 16:35

Oh and i had to renew my dbs the other day

So i grabbed the first bill i could find as proof of id

Except it was bloody useless as apparently i have the same initial as my husband!!!

So mr t reindeer and mrs t reindeer Hmm

Hideandgo · 05/07/2018 16:35

Great news! Hopefully everywhere will follow suit. Why on earth is mr/Mrs/miss relevant to delivery people/universities/banks/most places.

Halfeatentoast · 05/07/2018 16:40

It's good, but yes it's a shame no one listened when others (usually women) objected to it.

aaarrrggghhhh · 05/07/2018 16:50

Well it would be great if it was because people recognised that a person's biology was not relevant to how they should be treated in the world.

But that's not why they're doing it. At. All.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2018 17:08

Yes - it's good, but the 'most importantly' does grate given that women have been pointing out the issues with these sexed, marital status-based titles for decades.

WhereYouLeftIt · 05/07/2018 17:09

G5000 "Sad nobody has cared unti now that women were forced to expose themselves as married/not married/bra-burning feminist harridan"

^^ Absolutely this.

It's a bit like the school uniform issue. Lots of girls didn't want to wear skirts because of upskirting/restricting movement/cold knees in winter. Schools mainly did nothing, but will make the change for trans comfort? And here, the change is again being made for trans comfort?

Women, know your place!

TufVoyaging · 05/07/2018 17:17

Great news

Beamur · 05/07/2018 17:18

Yup, have to agree that the reason for the change comes back down to a (yet again) male centred decision, which makes it somewhat bittersweet.

TransplantsArePlants · 05/07/2018 17:18

It's the 'most importantly' that sticks in the craw.

NameChangedAgain18 · 05/07/2018 17:21

yep, women have been complaining about this for decades, but as soon as some trans people (let’s face it, the male ones) have an issue with it, it can’t be acquiesced to quickly enough.

Itscoldoutside01 · 05/07/2018 17:22

Just wondering how people prefer to be addressed- say in their bank or Dr surgery. I don't mind my first name being used but my grandmother, and in fact my mother, would be very unhappy to be addressed by their first name only.

OlennasWimple · 05/07/2018 17:23

Right outcome for the wrong reasons

senua · 05/07/2018 17:24

“I want to inform you that all (removed my uni’s name) Student ID cards issued from September won't have the Mr/Miss/Mrs/Ms title printed on them.

I wonder how long before this applies to everyone at the University and nobody will be Mr / Miss / Mrs / Ms / Dr. That will go down well with the academics.Grin

Cliveybaby · 05/07/2018 17:27

@senua yes!
I've worked bloody hard for my PhD! I want recognition dammit!

BettyDuMonde · 05/07/2018 17:29

I was about to say, if I’d earned ‘Dr’ I wouldn’t be keen to give it up!

The unearned ones ie, ‘is that Miss, Mrs or Ms’ aka ‘do you belong to your father, your husband or are you a man-hating-separatist?’ can absolutely cock off.

MIdgebabe · 05/07/2018 17:31

perhaps if it's too informal to use just a first name, just a surname could be used . Mrs lastname as a form of address is just like a hiccup before saying the name. It would only feel odd for a while

TalkinPeace · 05/07/2018 17:33

Wrong that generations of millions of pissed off women matter less than a small number of trans people
but its the right result

earned titles - Prof, Doctor, Cllr are absolutely fine

but those of us who prefer not to use a sexist title should be free to have our wish

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/07/2018 17:36

I know I'm being dim... but how does it protect the trans community from being exposed (in the unlikely event they shouldn't want to be)?
