Hi feminists, I’m a relative new comer to the feminist boards although I have been a mnetter for ages.

I have a teenage dd whom I am trying to tune in to feminist issues. So obviously Kendall Jenna is not a feminist issue but I’m torn. Should I be saying, she’s an adult woman, she can do what she likes and if she wants to post photos of herself with virtually all but her clit out ( ) then that’s her prerogative.

On the other hand I look at my short, curvy daughter (who is already a slave to Instagram) and know she will never look like that and that she already feels her curves look awful (for reference she’s a size 6 so I’m not deluded about her size) and people like Kendall Jenna and these other Instagram celebrities create an unrealistic, unobtainable example which give teens like my dd a good old stick to beat themselves with.

Any thoughts? I’m happy to be educated!

She’s one of those freakishly blessed people, genetically.

Can you imagine what Kylie will look like in ten years/20 years having had that much surgery at such a young age? Sad, really.

@tacolover, the bikini top is fine, quite modest actually. The bottoms are not. But actually @ounceofflouce is right, my question didn’t relate to Kendall Jenna per se but the general issue of scantily clad women who have won the genetic lottery and the issue of their image being plastered everywhere.

Get her an interest and reduce her instagram usage.
I am sorry but we are just setting teen girls up to fail if we allow them on these sites.
Most people don’t ressemble models so to be reminded all the time is bound to affect self esteem.
You can frame a feminist debate but kendells job is to sell stuff and herself. That’s it.

And just to pick up on what the last poster says, reducing instagram may not be easy but sounds like a great idea, I think. I know Jamie Oliver's banned one of his girls from posting selfies coz he thinks the look of instagram is so 'porny'. Pictures of half naked women are nothing new but this generation of teen girls is almost expected to join in as part of their everyday lives.

Size 6 is tiny, why is your daughter worried about her size?

I mostly agree with Biologi and Ounce except I think it is better to relentlessly push other activities rather than trying to minimise the instagram top-down so to speak, which risks making it excitingly forbidden.

Yes. I think I may try a bit of both. ie reducing screen time by which I then by default reduce instagram time and promoting some other activities. Would do me some good to have less screen time too...

@pinkyredrose - I don’t know. She is petite but still has curves. I think she hankers for that long, lean, look which I’m afraid that genetically she will never have. Mind you, find me a woman who is content with her body because I don’t think I know any

@planetpiffle stay on top of it. Mine's eating is all over the place. Ketogenic one day, only sweets the next... Driving us around the bend. The stress of not conforming to long, lanky and blonde (again, she's 1.73 m tall but doesn't see herself how beautiful she is) is undermining her confidence.
