In my local paper! Possibly the Trans capital of the UK, home of Allsorts, yet we have a newspaper article where the GC voice gets to be heard: www.theargus.co.uk/news/16334391.amp/?ref=twtrec&__twitter_impression=true

The tide is turning. We can start to speak knowing there are so many others behind us also emerging.

Yes to supporting Trans people, and ensuring their rights are protected, but no to erasure of sex based protections. Yes to talking about this!

One of the below the line comments on that article really made me laugh.

Essentially saying that this is why students should stick to "proper" courses like Law, Maths, Medicine, Engineering etc., rather than soft options, otherwise they're just racking up years of debt debating and worrying about willies - both present and missing.

MipMipMip · 05/07/2018 09:40

That's positive. She's going to be attacked mercilessly though.

Dr Stock was already being hassled on Twitter after WPUK announced she was going to be a speaker at the Brighton event. Brave women, given her academic role at Sussex Uni, and how far down the rabbit hole some from there already are. Thank you Dr Stock.

I think this article is a good move - puts the debate out there in a calm reasonable fashion. Other people can then pile on if they wish, but it tends to reflect badly on them.

Good not to be on the defensive, but able to put the GC arguments across without simultaneously having to defend against calls of bigotry.

What a brave woman.

My favourite response was the suggestion to rename gender studies 'agenda studies' Grin

Another great article - that's 3 today. Keep plugging away I think the floodgates might be about to open....

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 05/07/2018 10:52

Excellent news - drip, drip, drip. We're getting there methinks.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 05/07/2018 11:18

I hope they have plenty of support in Brighton - she speaks sense.

SweetGrapes · 05/07/2018 11:33

ChickenMe · 05/07/2018 11:34

Yay great news

happydappy2 · 05/07/2018 11:41

Wow Dr Stock-thank you for speaking up!

gendercritter · 05/07/2018 11:56

Very brave of her to speak up. She sounds fair and rational which is exactly what is needed.

The article heading is: "'Trans women are still males with male genitalia' - university lecturer airs controversial views"

Truly the world has gone mad. It's now a "controversial view" that people can't change sex.

So much of this is the media shit stirring for clicks. And I say that as someone who works in media.

Every time I read something like this it's like we're living out a morality play written by Orwell, Arendt, and Havel.

I note that the TA who is quoted attacking Dr Stock for her completely reasonable and logical view says:

“To have to either attend classes with someone that openly wants to deny you your basic human rights, or to work with them, is incredibly stressful and harmful.”

Isn't that exactly what many women feel when faced with someone who was born and brought up male and is now insisting that they are a woman and have right to occupy women's private space?

You've shot yourself in the foot there, mate. Too right: you are challenging our human rights and causing incredible stress and harm — to women. I note too that that transactivist ends his quote with 'No debate.' Even Len McCluskey and the Morning Star are saying that 'no debate' is not an acceptable response.

arranfan · 05/07/2018 14:02

To have to either attend classes with someone that openly wants to deny you your basic human rights, or to work with them, is incredibly stressful and harmful.
I wonder if th debate around what is meant by basic human rights because there's so much that is undefined around what is meant by the concept of shared values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect, and independence?

As in this article about cycling, McKinnon argues that mandating testosterone blockers as a prerequisite for competition etc. is a violation of human rights: eu.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2018/01/11/these-transgender-cyclists-have-olympian-disagreement-how-define-fairness/995434001/

Is it possible that we lack shared values? We understand the concept but will substantially disagree on the practicalities and details when discussing them with others who have very different perspectives?
