Goodness me. He has taken no prisoners. Grin

It's a grim article but he's right, TM is clearly trying to be 'woke' and attract the youth vote.

Pratchet · 05/07/2018 04:46

The Tories will lose their seat where I am, if self ID goes through. People won't vote Labour, they just won't vote Tory, and that will be enough.

It's a great critique of the Tories imo - I think many people are scratching their heads and saying why has the change sex lobby got such a hold of the Tory party - Labour - yes but Tory - not in a million years normally.

And it is a huge distraction when they are failing to sort out the Brexit elephant in the room. The questions he's raising deserve to be raised because the Tory Party in Power is acting strangely out of character.....

Wanderabout · 05/07/2018 06:36

"Miss Mordaunt's bien pensant proselytising is especially perplexing since she is said to have ambitions to lead the Tory party. Her fashionable gyrations are unlikely to go down well with the party faithful."

This is a very good point. It's easy to think in the Westminster bubble that Self-Id is desired by everyone. Especially since Stonewall and Pink News are so ubiquitous.

But Stonewall are campaigning against women's rights. And Pink News have recently run an article arguing the case for incest. These are not mainstream views.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 05/07/2018 08:03

Brilliant article!

And for those of you who foam at the mouth at the mere mention of the Mail - this is exactly why it's important to have a plurality of publications across the political spectrum.

FlippinFumin · 05/07/2018 08:11

Blinkin heck, another great article today. Is today the day we see the pushback? Is today the day the general public go WTAF?

LizzieSiddal · 05/07/2018 08:15

Great article. Let’s hope the Givt listen.

www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/07/03/exclusive-just-13-of-tory-voters-agree-with-governments-proposed-transgender-policy/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

This is the Pink news article re the You Gov Poll asking who’s in favour of Self ID.
Only 13% of Torys are in favour and 18% of the general population. That means there’s an awful lot of TERFS out there 😂.

SleepPatternOfABat · 05/07/2018 08:27

Loving the use of 'bien pensant' for Mordaunt, which I had to look
up to double-check its meaning! ('someone who accepts and/or espouses a fashionable idea after it has been established and maintains it without a great amount of critical thought').

This stuff will go down like a lead balloon in her own constituency of Portsmouth North.

That's quite rare on a trans article.

I have long been saying that the DM is going to be key in this. I know people are fairly sneery about it, but it has a circulation multiple times higher than any broadsheet and a huge reach online. It does, sometimes, get it absolutely right.

And what’s needed is to get this out to as many people as possible - because when the general public are made aware of this they can make their own minds up.

And surely everyone wants public discussion? I mean then light is shone on this and everyone can talk about it?

Graphista · 05/07/2018 08:36

What I find interesting is that on almost all the 'why vote tory' threads many posters cite labour and lib-dem being pro self ID As the reason they vote Tory!

Bowlofbabelfish · 05/07/2018 08:41

I’ve pondered it. I will vote for whomever commits to preserving women’s rights the most. Whether that’s someone I’d vote for normally or not (fringe parties excluded.)

I am a single issue voter until this is sorted. That’s how important it is. And I say that fully aware of, and angry about, austerity cuts/treatment of the disabled etc. Those policies are dreadful - at the same time this is ALL WOMENS RIGHTS. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. It took us hundreds of years to fight for them. Austerity hits women and children directly - if our rights are stripped we will be doubly hit.

I’ve never voted Tory, I’m a left winger of the old school. But I will vote for ANY reasonable candidate in my ward who votes to preserve women’s rights. If that’s the Tory candidate so be it.

I'm on I will spoil my ballot paper unless one of the parties comes out actually in favour of women's rights, in which case I will vote for them.

Is it me, or is the dam finally breaking?

Bowlofbabelfish · 05/07/2018 09:12

Yes if none of them do im on a sticky wicket! In that scenario I will spoil my ballot and write in why.

I’m angry about this. I want to use my vote to decide on important matters of national governance. I thought my basic human rights were set in stone. We shouldn’t even need to be doing this. Grr.

OvaHere · 05/07/2018 09:17

I think because prior to the local elections there were indications the Tories were backing away from self ID. It was Labour and Lib Dem pushing it hard. Clearly smoke and mirrors but there you go.

Based on James Kirkup's article, who seems to have some inside channels, it appears that this issue isn't simply defined by party lines but more by the feelings of individual MPs. There are those for and against in all parties.

busyboysmum · 05/07/2018 09:27

I have always thought this about the Tories - I am not sure who they think they are kidding TBH but it's definitely a vote loser for them. So it seems an odd policy for them to persue.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 05/07/2018 09:32

Yes! This is EXACTLY what we need. Whilst we may not agree with the Mail's stance and reporting style on many things, it's a very widely read paper and this will reach a lot of people.

I am really pleased that the article sets it out bluntly. I wonder if the government's tactic of launching the consultation over the summer will backfire? It's normally known as "silly season" because there is so little news. Meaning that it wouldn't be difficult to get a lot of media interest in this...

Exactly. I repeatedly have the same conversation with people that the rights we have now were not always ours because we hold up half the sky but they had to be wrested from those with power. Austerity, women's refuges, access to health/education/civic life.

Let's not insult our forebears by letting those rights slip away and force others to realise the need for what they've lost and win them again.
