Can anyone remember the title of the book I posted about yesterday? I can't remember it for the life of me.

The subject of the book was women's orgasm, specifically it was based on a real life course held in London, that helped women to become more orgasmic, based on weekly lessons.
It would have been published in the late 1970s to early 1980s.
The cover was purple and bright green.

I want to say that it was called Body Electric or similar but Google isn't showing it to me. It definitely quoted Walt Whitman in the preface.

More Googling has found a place in the U.S called Body Electric but it was set up by a man. Definitely not connected.

The book i'm referring to was written by women and at the time was considered to be a Feminist work. The book wasn't available in mainstream book shops. If anyone went to Uni in Manchester they may remember Grass Roots bookshop.

I can only think of Our Bodies Ourselves.

OP is it this one? Anne Hooper, Body Electric. Virago

BlessBlessYawn · 27/06/2018 16:38

Lisa, I remember Our Bodies Ourselves and it definitely wasn't that one.

Rear panel blurb for Hooper book:

"Six women meet. They have never met before. They come from different backgrounds, their emotional- circumstances vary widely All six are in search of an elusive goal - an orgasm. These women take part in a six-week course in which they discuss their sensual experiences, learn to-express their fears and confront their relationships. Together . they undertake erotic homework and learn how to use massage, self-examination, fantasy, physical exercises and discussion to acquire a new authority over their bodies. Every practical aspect of sexuality comes into their training. The Body Electric is written for everyone in search of sexual self-help. For these six women are not alone. Many women remain unhappily ignorant about their bodies. This book is for them and for women at all stages of understanding who want to gain more sexual self-assurance and pleasure."

arran YES!!

I tried Googling and it was giving me all sorts of results but not that.

Gosh, the cover of the 'Best Match' version is the purple and green cover that I remember. I haven't seen it for over 35 years as I lost the book in a move in 1982/3. I'd always had to hide it from my parents (times were different then!) and then when I moved out I lost it.

Back then Virago was the publisher that introduced those of us in our late teens and early 20s to Feminism. Margaret Atwood, The Women's Room and so on.

It was so odd. I knew that I remembered this book but also that I had it overlapping in my mind with a book one of my older cousins had that was sex positive and had a gherkin/cucumber/horned melon on the (bright green?) front cover. But I might also be confusing that with Fear of Flying and somehow I have Kin Flicks in mind but I don't think I mean the Lisa Alther novel.

It's so Confused because I can visualise the bookshelf but not quite clearly enough. Blush

arran oh dear, the book with the gherkin/cucumber/horned melon sounds vaguely familiar to me too. So now I'll be driving myself crazy trying to remember it.
