Girls only schools

I predicted this a while ago and now it’s come to pass: two prestigious girls schools in NY, Chapin and Brearley, will now accept boys who identify as girls. Where will this all lead?

This only gets really interesting when schools like Eton and Harrow are pressured, or forced, to accept trans boys. Those schools have far more prestige than any equivalent girls’ school, and offer access to the most influential old boys’ network in the country. Once wealthy parents with daughters cotton on to the fact that there’s a way of getting girls in there, the shit will really hit the fan. I can’t wait.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/06/2018 10:12

These are children - aren’t they too young to make such major life changing decisions?

NonSuchFun · 24/06/2018 11:09

Teen's friend is at a private girls school, one of the girls in her class now identifies as a boy. Teen "If she wants to be a boy why doesn't she want to go to the boys school?"

I think

  1. Possibly as it was GCSE year, not a good year to change schools,
  2. Maybe she is choosing male id to get away from sexualisation of women etc but still doesn't want to surround herself with boys. She is still female bodied, it would be quite challenging for her to go to a boys school, sports, changing rooms etc.
I think it is quite right that the school should continue to offer her support and protection. She may desist , maybe sooner rather than later. Mixed might well be appropriate but it's different for a child choosing a new school rather than one who transitions whilst liking the school they are at - that applies both ways I think.

"A child should be protected at all costs from such huge life changing decisions."

But somehow a trans girl should not be protected from a male puberty which will have huge, life-changing effects on her body.

jellyfrizz · 24/06/2018 15:11

*Why do you think girls schools benefit girls?8

A little old but: www.theguardian.com/education/2009/mar/18/secondary-schools-girls-gcse-results

"two prestigious girls schools in NY, Chapin and Brearley, will now accept boys who identify as girls."

No, they will be accepting girls who were assigned male at birth.

"Where will this all lead?"

It will lead to a tiny number of highly vulnerable children with recognised medical condition having a slightly easier life.

leontheprofessional · 24/06/2018 15:17

@Noviceoftheweek it wont lead anywhere because they are not the monsters certain users online would have you believe

Trans woman and girls are woman and should have the same protection under the law as their legal status

catherinedevalois · 24/06/2018 15:47

These are single sex schools not single gender schools. Why do we need to change any rules?

Wakame · 24/06/2018 16:11

"Why do we need to change any rules?"

Because a small group of extremely vulnerable girls with a recognised medical condition are suffering for want of that change in the rules.

PlantsArePeopleToo · 24/06/2018 16:15

Why hasn't Wakame been banned yet?

KappaKappa · 24/06/2018 16:19

With regard to the more general question about single sex education, my dc attend boys’ schools and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
DH also attended a boys school and I attended a girls’ school.

I assume if a boy identifying as a girl can attend a girls’ school then it will work the other way round too.

Wakame · 24/06/2018 16:20

"Why hasn't Wakame been banned yet?"

Do you advocate no-platforming" me?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/06/2018 16:24

Can someone explain how a baby can be ‘misassigned’ their sex at birth? I’d suggest that medical staff would know the very basics of biology at least. Because we all know that gender and sex aren’t the same thing.

Apart from rare cases of intersex babies, that's not a thing that actually happens. Repeating something that's scientifically false doesn't make it true.

  • so there is some self-selection going on which would need to be considered in any study.

Going back to this for a moment, there was one particular set of data which didn't have that bias - a big city somewhere ( might have been Seoul) where kids were for some reason all randomly allocated to schools, some of which were single sex and some coed.

It's simple, the midwife looks at the child's genitals, and unless they are ambiguous, will announce a child with a penis as male and a child with a vulva as female. It's a good system, and the midwife is almost always right.

However, occasionally they get it wrong. This can't really be helped in the case of trans kids, because they are likely to be 3 or 4 years old before their gender identity (another biological sex characteristic) becomes apparent. But that's OK - we now have ways of spotting these children and giving them the support they need (like allowing trans girls to attend girl's schools for example).

Please provide the peer-reviewed scientific evidence that gender identity is a biological sex characteristic.

Notable that Eton has no plans to admit trans boys. It hasn't yet had to deal with a trans girl wanting to stay on after transitioning but would be sympathetic. www.theguardian.com/education/2017/nov/11/eton-head-young-men-more-gender-intelligent

St Paul's Girls' School, on the other hand, had ten pupils transitioning or IDing as gender neutral at one point recently. www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/19/st-pauls-girls-school-pupils-choose-gender-indentity

Dinosaurchicken · 24/06/2018 16:51

I don’t think wakame knows what biological sex is. They are spouting unscientific nonsense.

Dinosaurchicken · 24/06/2018 16:52

I am of course waiting with baited breath for the first of the top county’s boys school to admit a biological female.

I checked with the (independent) girls' schools in my region before I commited to sending DD2 to one. Two of them are part of larger girls-school Associations who have a policy on this - it is basically that pupils who feel they are boys/gender neutral can stay at the school if they want to. But prospective pupils with a penis cannot attend the school. Basically, they're making full use of the sex exemption, which I am pleased with. (The two schools who aren't part of a bigger group called me in for a meeting and said they were still formulating policies in written forms but had no intention of giving places to anyone with a penis.)

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/06/2018 17:46

So if a girl at the girls school (say St. Paul’s) decides that they are a boy would they transfer to the boys school (and vice versa)?

PlantsArePeopleToo · 24/06/2018 18:58

Two of them are part of larger girls-school Associations

Would that be the Girls Day School Trust?
