Did anyone else read this? I thought it was very good, except for her use of gender to mean sex.

I found it a moderately interesting read, until I choked on my tea at this:

'the rising generation of bold young feminists who have not internalised oppression like their elders, and who are calling out sexism and misogyny where they see it'

Really? Young feminists today have somehow managed to grow up female in a patriarchal society without internalising their oppression, yet older feminists didn't manage to do that, poor things? So they haven't spent a lifetime calling out sexism and misogyny?

Starkstaring · 23/06/2018 08:01

Good article.

She didn't mention the trans epidemic stuffing people who don't conform with stereotypes - masculine women and feminine men - back into the "correct" boxes in the name of progress, but just reinforcing the old patriarchal order.

I wonder if she was thinking it but didn't dare?

SeahorsesAREhorses · 23/06/2018 08:06

Gosh, clever young feminists, not like those silly elder women.

ReluctantCamper · 23/06/2018 08:19

yes that phrase leapt out at me persister. Having seen a 'bold young feminist' on the gender quake debate roll her eyes at the idea that feminism should not centre men, I seriously question the idea that they are magically free of internalised oppression.

good read none the less

pachyderm · 23/06/2018 10:55

Good read but there's an obvious glaring elephant in the room she daren't mention, probably because of Little Owen's increasing influence in Guardian Towers.

Also bristled at the young feminist reference. Some of those blue-haired quislings are a fucking disgrace, attacking women to get male approval.

hackmum · 23/06/2018 11:08

Thanks, Reluctant for clicking the link - I thought it was supposed to happen automatically but obviously doesn't!

The young feminists reference was annoying but the rest was good, I thought, particularly for people who are interested in feminism but aren't aware of the historic debates.

Not got the energy for that long read right now but read the opener and it's about the sea change in hollywood, weinstein etc...

How many of the men accused by women (or men) have been imprisoned? Even arrested / charged? I think harvey weinstein was just arrested last week or something? The others who have been acccused of various things including by multiple people have made non-apologies, maybe a bit of time at a clinic to have a think (away from photographers and hope it blows over) and then nothing.

Woody Allen is still on various boards (oscars type stuff I think?) and they only just booted roman polanski who admitted to anally raping a child years ago!

I am not seeing a sea change here.

Also, how long did it take for the press / narrative (and lots of men including the ones at my work and some women) to go from oh that's bad to, hmm seems like it might be exaggerated can't be that bad, to "I can't even look at a woman any more!!!!".

So again, same old.

I'll look though the article when I have some more time :)
