Sex vs Gender on forms

I've read a lot of posts on FWR, and as a woman, and mum to two girls, I find the whole concept of self ID deeply worrying.

Since reading the board, I keep noticing how many official forms now ask for 'Gender' rather than 'Sex'. In some cases I find this baffling! This post has been prompted by an organ donor form which asks your gender. The options are Male Female Transgender Other or prefer not to say.

AIBU to think that it's actually someone's biological sex that is the relevant question here?? As in - which bits and bobs might you be able to donate after your death - because men and women are biologically different!

Part of me wonders if it's a touch of British prudishness because everyone's glad they don't have to say 'sex' out loud anymore!

Gender identity is entirely subjective and not a criterion for creating policy.

GladAllOver · 22/06/2018 12:23

Sex is the protected characteristic but the word doesnothave the narrow meaning some here claim.

What is your definition of sex?

MissMoneyPlant · 22/06/2018 12:25

Snappity Even more disadvantage from stereotyping of women though. Women gain immensely from a focus on gender rather than sex.

Eh? What does this mean? The two statements appear to contradict one another.

Even more disadvantage from stereotyping of women though.

Well, yes. I'd agree that stereotyping of women leads to more disadvantage than biological differences do. But the gender stereotypes applied to women (and men), and the behaviour encouraged of women (and men) are attributed on the basis of biological sex...

Women gain immensely from a focus on gender rather than sex.

No, we don't. We are oppressed by gender roles. We are oppressed by the concept of a "ladybrain" or some innate female "essense". And again, this gender bollox is inflicted on us because we are born female, so sex is rather important, hmm?

Ridiculous. What women (and gender nonconforming males) would benefit from is a rejection of gender stereotyping and arbitrary, culture-specific rules as to what forms of behaviour, interests and presentation are appropriate to either sex.

GladAllOver · 22/06/2018 15:19

Come on Snappity. I want to hear your definition of sex.

Picassospaintbrush · 22/06/2018 15:27

Baited breath.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 22/06/2018 15:33

Please explain yourself, Snappity. I didn't understand your comment and it's clear no one else did either.

sexnotgender · 22/06/2018 15:34

I didn’t understand either.

Snappity · 22/06/2018 15:37

I use sex as it used in the Equality Act 2010. The examples show social components.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/06/2018 15:38

But in another thread you just intimated that Sex and Gender in the EA mean the same thing... or were you just joshing Smile

furandchandeliers · 22/06/2018 16:50

Oh I didn't see this! I started a similar thread this morning on aibu after seeing someone finding out the "gender" of their babyGrin

GladAllOver · 22/06/2018 17:11

Snappity as Samphire says, you seem to be confused.
Is sex the same as gender, or not?
Can sex be changed or not?
