Eurydice Dixon, 22, was raped and murdered as she walked home from a gig she had performed at in Melbourne last week. A 19 year old man handed himself in to the police claiming responsibility for his crimes. The initial reaction of the police was to warn women to take responsibility for their own safety.

I’ve seen a lot of outrage on the Australian forums I frequent about the reaction from the police in this case.

That poor woman.

WTAF?

TransExclusionaryMRA · 19/06/2018 07:15

If it stopped the next one I’d take personal responsibility in a heartbeat, but what is meant by taking responsibility? I’ve done everything I can on a personal level, or at least I think I have. Seriously hurt my feelings all you want, I’d be very keen indeed to stop this cycle once and for all. I 100% promise to post not a single further thing on this thread if anyone feels I’m being goady, I’ll just sit in the background and read any responses and do my best to take it all on board in good faith.

For what it’s worth I’m very sad and sorry. It shouldn’t happen and it’s a tragic waste of a life.

SlowlyShrinking · 19/06/2018 07:25

Perhaps there could be a curfew for men after dark? Then women would be safe to go about their business and walk through parks without the risk of being raped and murdered. RIP

WanderingTrolley1 · 19/06/2018 07:33

Murderer is autistic. Will he be sentenced as “normal”?

TransExclusionaryMRA · 19/06/2018 07:37

Sure fuck it let’s explore that option, everything else has proved a bit useless hasn’t it? Would we be able to be assessed and licensed as no threat to women or just a blanket ban? Or could we be allowed out if accompanied by a woman? Also what further measures could be taken to protect women in the home?

AlfredDaButtler · 19/06/2018 07:39

Well for men, I’d say taking personal responsibility would go as far as “don’t rape or murder anyone”. Most men manage fine at that.

I will see if I can get some of the earlier coverage. Victoria Police were told off for advising women to 'be aware of your surroundings and carry a mobile" (which she had texted her friend not long before she was attacked, so thanks for that 'advice' VicPol).

Also comparing the coverage. Some guy gets beaten up at a football match, he is a 'poor victim of a hooligan', vs Eurydice, who 'strayed into the path of a predator'. The media still shows its bias, even though they have been called on it many times.

TransExclusionaryMRA · 19/06/2018 07:46

I’ve tried to be more proactive than that and drive women home after social events (I do this for men too as it happens as we can be damnsome violence amongst ourselves), I even pulled a rapist off a woman in an alley after hearing screams. I’m not actually violent in any way, but I’m pretty big myself and the attacker wasn’t to know that.

I’d still be keen to do more on this issue if required.

AlfredDaButtler · 19/06/2018 08:10

What do you think would help trema? I don’t think that men would necessarily take well to feminists telling them how to behave. It hasn’t done brilliantly in the past.

Trema?? That was meant to be TEMRA...

Here is the post from FB page Real for Women.

Comparing the two treatments of male victim (injured) to female victim (raped and murdered).

Eurydice was walking home after working at a comedy club, something she had done many times before. She probably chose walking through the football pitch as a safer alternative (open ground) than walking past houses and alleys where some male could jump out and attack her.

What she did not realise, is that the male predator (autism be damned) followed her for several kilometres on her journey. Then raped and killed her. Autism in this case is being used as an excuse to excuse male violence. It is not impulsive to follow someone for so very long, then rape and murder them. Women who have autism don't routinely rape and murder people.

Starting out in the comedy circuit is lowly paid, if at all. She really did not have excess money to spend on cabs, and public transport can be really shit.

Your comment about autism there is completely unfair. Men with autism don't routinely rape and murder people either. Just like the vast majority of NT people, the vast majority of autistic people of either sex are not violent.

TransExclusionaryMRA · 19/06/2018 12:00

I’d endeavor to dialogue about the importance of fathers in children’s lives, particularly for boys. There is one whopping correlation between men in prison for violent offences and having no father around.

I’d also look to ensuring proper socialisation between boys and girls before the age of 4, and make sure post 4th birthday boys and girls are not separated by gender as it sends out a strong socialised message boys and girls are separate.

In terms of what I’d do now, I agree we need to change how these things tend to be reported. Enough men manage to not be violent towards women that it shouldn’t be treated as a foregone conclusion.

I’d also be careful of what sort of message we are sending are sending out to young men. You tell a whole group that they are X thing many will take that label and identify and embrace it. We live in a world where tonnes of women take to heart the message that women are lesser and internalise it. Conversely you tell boys men are violent and a proportion of them will internalise and embrace what they are told they are.

TransExclusionaryMRA · 19/06/2018 12:00

This autism thing is a fucking ridiculous red herring btw.

NotMeOhNo · 19/06/2018 12:03

Eurydice was an active radical feminist. Her vigil was hijacked by libfems in Sydney, and made into an intersectional blah, coopting a woc killed by someone she knew.

MorrisZapp · 19/06/2018 12:06

Is there a direct quote of what the police actually said?

hackmum · 19/06/2018 12:32

For a notable contrast, see the BBC's story about a "controversial" rapper being shot dead:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-44529367

"But his short career was plagued by allegations of domestic violence. He was facing 15 felony charges at the time of his death, including aggravated battery of a pregnant woman."

So what did people say about him?

Kanye West tweeted: "I never told you how much you inspired me when you were here."

Rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs described XXXTentacion as "one of the most interesting people I've ever met."

Footballer Daniel Sturridge, who has played for Liverpool and England, said it was a "sad day for music".

Documentary maker Louis Theroux said: "Notwithstanding personal demons, he was a huge talent & bringing a beautiful new feel to hip hop. So sad."

You get the idea. When men are violent towards women, it's because of their "personal demons". When women are victims of male violence, it's because they foolishly did something to provoke the attack - like walking home through a park.

Can't remember which rules of misogyny apply here. Probably all of them.

LaSqrrl · 19/06/2018 12:37

Newspaper quote:
Police had been quick to tell the public (and let’s be clear here, by that, I mean women) to “make sure that you have situational awareness, that you’re aware of your surroundings, and make sure that people know where you are”.

“If you’ve got a mobile phone, carry it, and if you’ve got any concerns call police.”

A day or two later, some befumbled press conference by some police officer about 'no we didn't mean that, and thanks for the feedback' or some other rambly bullshit.

Face, their go-to, is always woman-blame.

LaSqrrl · 19/06/2018 12:40

1st rule of misogyny: Women are responsible for what men do.
6th rule of misogyny: Women who go around being female AT men by menstruating and breast feeding babies deserve punishment.
8th rule of misogyny: Men are whatever men say they are and women are whatever men say they are.
9th rule of misogyny: Men always know the "real reasons" for everything women do and say.
10th rule of misogyny: The worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad.
11th rule of misogyny: whatever women suffer from, it is worse when it happens to men.
12th rule of misogyny: Women's ability to recognize male behavior patterns is misandry.

Maybe not Rule 6, exactly, but close.

LaSqrrl · 19/06/2018 12:41

yeah whoops, "Face," should have been "Face it," doh

Helmetbymidnight · 19/06/2018 12:42

I belong to a large local FB group (I dunno why) where people talk among other things about local crimes.

There was a rape recently and there were two or three knife-attacks so there were a few separate threads on each.

The response to the (male) victims of the knife-attacks was - as it should be - overwhelmingly sympathetic.

The response to the (female) victim of the rape was - (I think they thought they were being sympathetic) - v v different - what was she doing out? Why? Who does that? Why didn't she get a cab? She should have done self-defence? If she knew self-defence she'd be fine, etc, etc.

I thought I knew about misogyny but I found it absolutely shocking to see these threads side by side.

hackmum · 19/06/2018 12:43

"make sure that you have situational awareness"

Yeah, because women are so stupid they don't know where they are most of the time. And if they did know where they were, that would be enough to stop men from killing them.
