My Twitter account has been hacked by a TRA, I don't know who has done it , although I have my suspicions, does anyone with any technical knowledge know what I can do about it, or how you can prove who might have done it? I know it's technically illegal but don't think the police care about these kinds of things. Basically, my Twitter handle has been changed from a nickname to my real name with another @ name added. Does this mean they now have access to my email correspondence, am v worried about this, can anyone help?

Hi there, I am so sorry this has happened to you.

I'm not on Twitter, and don't know very much about it but this guidance seemed pretty decent?

First - have you changed passwords - on your twitter account but importantly on other accounts like fb?
If your email address is linked to other accounts secure them up now.

I'm really sorry these nasty buggers have come for you like this.

BesmirchingMotherhood · 16/06/2018 01:20

Yy, change your twitter password, change your password anywhere else that you use it, and if the password would have given access to your email, change any other passwords for sites that are controlled by that email. (In case they’ve used the ‘reset password’ feature to have new passwords emailed to that email address if they’ve had access.)

Sorry Flowers

And totally report it once you’ve done those things.

You've all already said what I was going to say, bar one thing: when you use an email account for Twitter, don't use one that contains your real name.

Disclosure of your personal data without your consent is a GDPR breach. Tell the police (if only because you may get hate mail and doorstepping harassment), keep screencaps etc as proof, and tell the ICO.

I keep meaning to do a cyber security teach-in thread and now I really regret not doing it sooner. I'll do it this evening.

Firstly thanks for all the replies! haXXor my email address did NOT contain my real name, which is why it's so worrying that they found it. I did screenshot what they did as proof, didn't think the police would really be interested in it. Also, what is the ICO?

ICO.org.uk

ICO = The Information Commissioner's Office

Is your email address associated with your fb account? Could searching your email address on fb lead to your name?

Raspacihno · 16/06/2018 20:00

I would clse the account down for good and assume they'd probably been in your email account some how. I hope your pw isn't something guessable?

R0wantrees · 16/06/2018 20:01

You can always use twitter to raise the issue for example with your MP or journalists who have reported recently on the Twitter has been used by some TRAs.

If you feel able, use the @ , you can also @ twittersupport.

I noticed that Andrew Gilligan has his DMs open too.

Do you have a Facebook account in your own name? Perhaps you used some of the same registration details.
