As much of an arse as this man might be, do we really want to create petitions against folk who say things we don’t like or agree with? We talk about how folk are scared to speak out these days for being jumped on - do we want MPs to be scared to speak out on an unpopular view for having a mob turn on them and start petitions etc against them? Too many MPs are already too scared to speak out on certain issues because social media makes it so easy for folk to out them and try and bring them down.

I’ll sign a petition for reform of parliament so that you can’t sneak bills through, minimum numbers for votes etc.

I think Chope is pretty vile.

But I’m uneasy about personal witch hunting especially in this climate of offence and identity politics. So on this occasion no I won’t sign. That doesn’t mean I agree with him or his views, but more that the response to this should be parliamentary reform. Stripping him of his knighthood won’t do that .

Shockers · 17/06/2018 12:50

I understand why he routinely objects to bills, but this one should be without question to any person of decency.

Signed and shared.

CaitlynsCat · 17/06/2018 13:12

"I understand why he routinely objects to bills, but this one should be without question to any person of decency."

I think he has objected to dozens if not hundreds of apparently obvious bills. I 'm sure some are as worthy or more so than this

Maybe if politicians actually did their jobs instead of sloping off early on Fridays this wouldn't happen

You do realise they have to be in their constituencies on the weekends? My GP has surgeries on a Saturday morning. In a couple of weeks there is an event to remember jo Cox, it is on a Friday She attended a local Windrush demonstration.

Can you imagine how a Scottish MP could be in Parliament Friday evening until late and then have a surgery Saturday morning?

FraxinusExcelsior · 17/06/2018 14:57

Signed

hungryhippie · 17/06/2018 14:58

Signed. Thanks for sharing.

Shockers · 17/06/2018 15:00

Yes Caitlyn, I suspect that to be true, but this is the one this particular thread is about.

CaitlynsCat · 17/06/2018 15:01

"Can you imagine how a Scottish MP could be in Parliament Friday evening until late and then have a surgery Saturday morning?"

Technically the house only sits on Friday for Private Members Bills. And this until 3pm, not evening.

CaitlynsCat · 17/06/2018 15:04

"Yes Caitlyn, I suspect that to be true, but this is the one this particular thread is about."

Yes but it's nonsense really isn't it. If there is a problem with the Private Members system they should reform it, rather than deciding that this is the 'Worst Man in Parliament' based on a slightly random Bill.

LinoleumBlownapart · 17/06/2018 15:08

I would sign a petition to get the law passed properly.

Signing a petition to get a man's knighthood removed seems just pointless. What good is that going to do? It certainly isn't going to change anything regarding up skirting. He's actually highlighted the problem. Surely that's going to do more good in the long run.

Shockers · 17/06/2018 16:09

Ok.

BarbarianMum · 17/06/2018 16:28

Signed with pleasure. Ignorant little toerag that he is. Angry

Kettlepotblackagain · 17/06/2018 16:35

I'm all for signing a petition on anything that risks women's rights, safety and dignity.

But in this case it is not appropriate for me to be doing so. I'm not going to pretend I'm a supporter of this man, but the information about why he has don't this has been mis represented and won't we won't be doing ourselves any favours if we immediately get our pitchforks at the ready and start spewing untruths without looking rationally at the facts.

If the Bill is not passed on July 6th then I will be signing.

BarbarianMum · 17/06/2018 16:42

Ive looked rationally at the facts and am quite happy to sign any petition that gets this thoroughly odious little toad stripped of his knighthood, thanks. Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 17/06/2018 16:46

It seems as though the root of the issue may be that having PMBs on Friday afternoon is effectively discriminatory against members with good reasons to want to get back to their further flung constituencies and homes. It must inevitably mean they're dominated by those who either live pretty near London and/or don't have much by way of family commitment.

Clionba · 17/06/2018 18:54

He objected to the pardon for Alan Turing.

Vicky1990 · 17/06/2018 20:35

He has objected so that the issue can be debated to make sure there are no loopholes that could crop up later.
For example if a woman took a photograph of a child or man that was inappropriate without consent.
Women can be perverted as well so the law needs to be made to cover all eventualities.

Efferlunt · 17/06/2018 20:59

Think this is a bit of a witch hunt. Chope’s been at this for years. Bloody good thing he’s being called out on it

Ihuntmonsters · 18/06/2018 02:24

The bill will come back on another Friday afternoon when it is selected to do so with no guarantee of more debate. At which point Chope can easily object again, and he would probably happily do just that if not for the negative publicity.

PigletJohn · 18/06/2018 14:00

@vicky1990

"He has objected so that the issue can be debated to make sure there are no loopholes that could crop up later."

No, that's not true.

Hullabalooo · 18/06/2018 14:06

Signed

drearydeardre · 18/06/2018 14:49

I do think some posters here and on social media should take care with making libellous statements and name calling this man - he is a judge and I am sure he knows when the line is crossed.

So many people seem to think that the internet is anonymous and they can call others names and accuse them of all sorts. He has a right to do what he did whether it is 'the right thing to do' or not.

MsMcWoodle · 18/06/2018 17:03

Who did this then?
