Sex or gender in this questionnaire question?

As part of a group i am involved in I've been asked to review the questions for a survey and i'm unsure if they have worded one correctly. The question is:

  1. Your gender Male  Female  Non-binary  Prefer not to say 

it is my understanding that Gender is man, woman or non-binary or other options, but sex can and will only be male or female. So if they wish to ask about gender the options should be man, woman, non-binary or prefer not to say. Or they ask about sex and it's male or female or prefer not to say. Before i make a twat of myself by responding i wanted to guage opionion. I've found the WHO definition of gender - "Gender refers to the socially constructed characteristics of women and men" . But haven't found anything similar defining sex.

or should i just let it go? I'm not really interested in getting into a debate with them, but if it's clearly wrong and i can provide evidence i am happy to correct.

thanks, can you describe sex as non-binary? I didn't think you could? - unless very rare case where sexual biology really is both .

how should they word the question if they want to give the option non-binary?

It should say your sex male/ female

Not gender! ( they are not the same )
Dont know about 'non binary' . To me that refers to 'gender' which is a subjective concept not an observable fact.

As a trans woman, if a form asks for my sex, I check male, if it asks for my gender, I check female. Sex is biological, gender is psychological.

Do you need to know what sex the respondents are?

Cumberlover76 · 13/06/2018 15:44

the main thrust of the survey is to get data about equal opportunities for men/women in the workplace. It's Athena Swan if anyone knows much about it.

As it is about equal opportunities, I'd go for belt and braces and have a
Sex: M / F / prefer not to say
Gender: Man / woman / non-binary / prefer not to say

Then the results can be viewed with whatever sex/gender filter you like.

Cliveybaby · 13/06/2018 15:50

exactly what ^ @TeenTimesTwo says

GibbertyFlibbert · 13/06/2018 15:52

www.ecu.ac.uk/equality-charters/athena-swan/

This is how someone else did it and it is headed "gender equality" and the Athens Swan Twitter also uses gender mobile.twitter.com/athena_swan?lang=en I therefore think that is what you should use.

Without knowing Athens Swan, personally I would seek to be as inclusive as possible for instance adding "ungendered" and "gender fluid" too
