Women policing women

Why do women do this?

Why do women, particularly left wing women, police each other's language and actions so much worse than men?

Even Germaine Greer is being hailed as no feminist for a few comments, despite the incredible work she's done in the past.

Feminists are pretty awful at this call out culture, I think men on the left do it to women but not to each other. I have a feeling this is why women are more likely to be religiously observant too, but that may be a different conversation. However I instinctively think it all feeds from the same conditioning, women "to be seen to be" XXX in order to compete with other women.

As of late I've noticed more odious behaviour from supposed feminists and it's made friends of mine abandon that label.

(Obviously ‘fair’ is reasonably subjective, which is why for the most part people need to explain why they have decided to drawn the ‘fair’ line where they have when there is a disagreement)

I don't think doing nothing to help and doing something that harms are the same thing (particularly when sometimes you simply cannot help on account of the patriarchy). But I think there's something in what Lass says that if it is patently clear that someone could easily have contributed to the cause and perhaps even took more trouble not to, then we can say that wasn't great feminism, right?

This is interesting - sort of acts versus omissions.

But I suppose it could be seen as a distraction - judging whether someone is doing feminism well or badly. Time could be better spent identifying systems of oppression and dismantling them.

If someone actively bolts oppressive structures back together then that is a different matter - they are being antifeminst.

In Amy Poehler's book, she repeats the mantra "good for her, not for me". We could all do with saying that a little bit more.

"I don’t think I have ever agreed with anything GG has said"

What-absolutely nothing ever? Blimey.

You understand what I mean Bertrand! Grin

BertrandRussell · 13/06/2018 17:59

I don't actually. Saying you have never agreed with anything Greer has said is so monumentally stupid I can only assume some massive misunderstanding.

How do you propose doing this and who is responsible?

And until that happens and the persons responsible take up the load the Miley Cyruses or Nicki Minajs and their like can carry on doing what they do. I'm picking women who are in a position not to have take their clothes off to earn money.

I don't understand how it would be possible never to agree with GG on anything. I can think of plenty of people I have only agreed with on a very small number of things but they would be at the extremes of politics or religion.

Oh OK!

I meant ‘I don’t think I have ever agreed with GG’ as shorthand for ‘I disagree with the ideology underpinning GG’s POV and have never listened to her expressing her POV/analysing things and thought ‘yes I agree with that’ in the way that I do with some other people some of the time’.
