''Several activists, men and women, were arrested last month, accused of being "traitors" and working with foreign powers.''
''Loujain al-Hathloul, a well-known figure in the campaign for women's driving rights, was believed to be one of those held.''
''Rights group Amnesty International described the arrests as "blatant intimidation tactics". On Sunday, Saudi prosecutors said 17 people in total had been detained, but said eight had been released "temporarily".

Good to see Amnesty finally making a comment.

''Some men have taken to social media to vent their dissatisfaction with the change in the law, using an Arabic hashtag that translates as: "You won't drive."

Women are responding with humour;

Lovely picture

Roll on 24th June.

Good news, but the situation seems quite volatile. I hope none of the women get hurt by males feeling their control slipping.

I hope none of the women get hurt.

The idea there are places on earth where women cannot drive a car is utterly mad.

Italiangreyhound · 06/06/2018 02:29

Sad Saudi men feel so threatened at the idea of women taking to cars.

What will be next, the TV remote in women's hands!

AngryAttackKittens · 06/06/2018 03:28

It's about time! Now if they could let out the activists recently arrested that would be great.

J4nice · 06/06/2018 03:31

%#$@ now we are all going to be mowed over by woman in cars

HerRoyalNotness · 06/06/2018 03:48

This I’d all part of the KSA Vision 2030 which hopes to open the kingdom fully to attract tourists by then. The crown prince is leading the changes, it’s an exciting time for them and I hope it’s not too volatile. I’d love to be there as it develops and changes

J4nice · 06/06/2018 03:52

Popcorn anyone

AngryAttackKittens · 06/06/2018 03:54

There's a bit of "may you live in interesting times" about the whole thing in that the situation is very unstable, but it's definitely not boring! It's a young country, demographically, the religious authorities have to make some concessions if they don't want outright rebellion on their hands.

QuarksandLeptons · 06/06/2018 20:51

It’s a positive step but the biggest issue is getting rid of the male guardianship law

SeahorsesAREhorses · 06/06/2018 21:10

Why do women always have to fight so hard for basic things, then they are grudgingly given. Makes me so angry and sad. Men, do better.

speakingwoman · 06/06/2018 21:20

It would be nice to mark the day somehow. A bumper sticker or something.

UpstartCrow · 06/06/2018 21:23

Thats a good idea.

Yes- does it just mean that instead of being driven by a man they will have a male passenger?

UpstartCrow · 06/06/2018 21:29

As far as I know they won't need a guardian in the car, but will either end of the journey. And they cant take driving lessons from a man who is not a relative.
