Burn the witch

I’ve attached a conversation being had between a couple of male, right-on liberal acquaintances. They’re talking about Arlene Foster. I think it’s very telling that the punishment they advocate for her is the medieval punishment for witchcraft, ie. if you don’t like what a woman says, she must be a witch. Not, “I think her views are repellent and I hope she gets voted out,” but “We should kill her by crushing.”

Neither of them has ever advocated the torture/murder of any male heads of state, politicians, rapists, or murderers.

If I pointed this out to them, I don’t think they would get it at all. AIBU?

I have come to the conclusion that men from all political colours, (the more extreme their politics the worse they appear) when posting on social media about politics seem to have certain similarities. I won't speculate why.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/06/2018 16:07

I loathed Margaret Thatcher but was also aghast at the similar way she was treated, there were some disgusting and violent comments made when she died by 'right on' individuals. I don t think Reagan got the same treatment.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/06/2018 16:12

Hating politicians is pretty standard, but there's always a mysoginist twist when it's a female politician.
Having said that, is this really advocating torture/murder? It's just rhetoric isn't it?
And they even say her medieval views deserve a medieval punishment.

RadicalFern · 05/06/2018 16:16

I know that they're unlikely to actually murder anyone, but for medieval punishments why not the stocks or something else? Why a violent and prolonged death?

Depressingly, I think a proportion of men have such rage against women that they have fantasies of killing them. This is a way for them to legitimise sharing those fantasies.

Women have no idea how much men hate them.

LassWiADelicateAir · 05/06/2018 19:28

It's just rhetoric isn't it? Yes it is.

I would not describe Arlene Foster or her beliefs as wicked, evil or medieval.

I am quite prepared to accept that her motivation for opposing abortion comes from a genuine belief in the sanctity of life.

I know my opinion on abortion is not a popular one on here (it is the lesser wrong of 2 wrongs and is necessary) so I don't necessarily think she is coming from it with the viewpoint of hating women.

I can't find any allowance for her views on homosexuality.

I suppose I should also say that until fairly recently Sinn Fein were pretty repellent too but they would never have spoken of Sinn Fein in that way.

I agree.

Ereshkigal · 05/06/2018 19:33

If anyone doesn't believe that this widespread sharing of violence ideation against women is a thing they need only to pop over to Twitter or Reddit.

SquishySquirmy · 05/06/2018 20:02

Uurgh.

YANBU, and I am no fan of Arlene Foster!

I agree with Lass too in that whilst I disagree strongly with Foster's views, I do not think her views are "evil".

I feel uncomfortable when criticism of politicians starts to veer towards imagining violent ends* for them, no matter who the politician is. This seems to be more prevalent now (although perhaps I just notice it more?) And the unchecked misogeny annoys me intensely. Its not even necessary! There is plenty to say about Arlene Foster without calling her a witch. Just as there was plenty to criticise Thatcher for without picking apart her looks.

"Should we all be misoygnist now father?"
What vile methods of execution did they plan for Edwin Poots when he didn't like the notion of gay blood, or Jim Wells when he thought gay parents were more likely to be abusive? Or is it just women they have torture+murder fantasies about? Go on, ask them. Enquiring minds want to know.

powershowerforanhour · 05/06/2018 21:54

Misogynist, even.

SquishySquirmy · 05/06/2018 22:00

Ereshkigal The lack of a "U" between Q and R makes me feel a little nauseous. Maybe that makes me some kind of contrived-quirky-spelling bigot? Grin

AskAuntLydia · 05/06/2018 22:03

More and more, woke men are showing us they hate women even more than right wing traditional misogynists do.

It's terrifying and depressing.

Blessed be the fruit.

You can't comdem a man for speaking the truth

mancheeze · 06/06/2018 05:22

When you consider how much men like pornography you understand they hate women deeply.

It matters more to me that girls know this and learn to trust their perceptions of this hatred instead of playing the game of risk with men.

J4nice · 06/06/2018 05:26

Men watch porn because it's art take metart for example and woman get mad and jealous because they can't compete with that perfect looking artist

Bowlofbabelfish · 06/06/2018 07:04

You think the simulated or real abuse and rape of women is art? Is the violence and anger part of the art?

Do expand on this charming view...I’m all ears

ALittleBitofVitriol · 06/06/2018 07:26

True, that privilege is reserved for women.

hackmum · 06/06/2018 08:32

It's frightening that violent fantasies against women are now so mainstream they can be expressed publicly without fear of recrimination.

It hardly needs pointing out that Arlene Foster's views are not medieval, and wouldn't have been considered anything out of the ordinary even 30 years ago. Indeed, they are views that are commonplace in many societies today.

But it demonstrates the real hatred some men have for opinionated women, and the anger that those women should have any kind of power or influence at all.
