Scots Daily Mail / organ donation

A depressing front page in the Scottish Daily Mail yesterday.
And on registering with a new GP, both the registration form and the organ donation form asked for my gender, with no mention of sex.

Does it make any difference which sex you are for organ donation? Please reassure me and say it doesn't.
This does mean that transgender people will be missing out on things like smear tests, presumably.

It seems to make quite a considerable difference to organ donation in some cases.

Second hit on google for me:

(First was a reddit thread so doesn't count).

It can make a difference yes. There’s some evidence that kidneys do better in the sex they came from for example. I don’t think it’s as simple as ‘mist have a kidney from a woman’ but more chances of success long term and long term function.
I’m not sure about other tissues such as cornea/heart etc. I would imagine it’s quite tissue specific

I wouldn't worry too much about the organ donation register; nobody actually donates their organs without a comprehensive medical history. Nobody will miss a detail like this!

Thank goodness for that. To be honest, I don't understand why doctors and the organ donation registry need to ask about gender, but don't need to ask about sex. I like my GP to know which sex I am, and wouldn't expect him/her to do a good job of helping me with my health if they didn't. Doesn't everyone feel that way?
