One of the many Goodful posts popped up on my Facebook today all about PCOS.

The opening paragraph:

PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects people who were assigned female at birth, with symptoms that impact periods, fertility, hair growth, weight, and more.

Omg we can cure it by always assigning all babies as male!

changeypants · 22/05/2018 19:43

FFS

AsAProfessionalFekko · 22/05/2018 19:46

Can the good men now please find a solution for horrible period pains? I always said that if men got them there'd be a cure by now.

Yay! Good news! The menopause will be a thing of the past! As will ovarian cancer. What a relief.

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/05/2018 19:46

Ffs.

In brighter news, it looks like they have found the root cause of PCOS and a very promising treatment avenue has been proposed:www.newscientist.com/article/2168705-cause-of-polycystic-ovary-syndrome-discovered-at-last/

On the down side, this is down to how female foetuses are exposed to AMH in the womb so I’m afraid any bepenised people won’t be able to benefit from it.

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/05/2018 19:46

A better link hopefully

I do wonder what would happen in the delivery room and register office if a parent insisted that their baby born with clearly female genitals was recorded on the paperwork as a boy. Would that be allowed?

DoinItForTheKids · 22/05/2018 19:48

God knows. It's utter madness.

OP posts:
DuchyDuke · 22/05/2018 19:49

It’s because a lot of men who were born as women don’t get a total hysterectomy because of the risks; a close mate gets severe pcos symptoms even though he transitioned years ago.

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/05/2018 19:50

No. It wouldn’t atcthe register office. You need your hospital discharge papers which say ‘X gave birth to a female child on date x at x hospital.’

They take the sex from that

DoinItForTheKids · 22/05/2018 19:51

So my work colleagues who are men I should now refer to as people who were assigned male at birth?

God help us all - it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue does it!

In order to 'become' a woman, never mind the bottom and top surgery - what about the bit in the middle? To be a woman you also need a uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Then you too can experience the ongoing range of misery from PCOS, Mittleschmertz, period pain, bloating, any type of gynaecological cancer, and let's not forget our old friend, endometriosis.

The registry office - last bastion of common sense?? Who knew.

Bloody Nora 🙄

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/05/2018 19:54

It’s because a lot of men who were born as women don’t get a total hysterectomy because of the risks; a close mate gets severe pcos symptoms even though he transitioned years ago.

Then i feel for them because PCOS is shit.

However they were not assigned female at birth they are medically and biologically female, and have now undergone the transition process to be still female, but societally regarded as a transman.

It’s the use of the term assigned that’s the issue, because it implies that sex is not an observable impartial thing. A sensitive wording could be used for transmen without the use of the word assigned.

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/05/2018 19:58

‘PCOS is a hormonal disorder caused by exposure of the female foetus to abnormal hormone levels. it leads to ovarian dysfunction with symptoms that impact periods, fertility, hair growth, weight, and more.

A little better. The use of assigned is poor science.

HotRocker · 22/05/2018 19:58

Good evening people assigned female at birth and people assigned male at birth, this is your pilot speaking…
I think we should have these titles on toilets and changing room doors.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 22/05/2018 20:03

Well that article would explain child number 3!!

Quite the surprise

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 22/05/2018 20:11

It will be interesting to see what happens if/when a reliable method of screening for prostate cancer is devised and provided under the NHS especially as a former colleague has been advised that it is illegal to include any reference to ‘gender assigned at birth’ and then gender reassigned on medical records held in their department.

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/05/2018 20:13

It’s a nice bit of work. Hopefully they will also trial other compounds - cetrorelix does have quite a few side effects including a few percent risk of OHSS which can be life threatening.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 22/05/2018 20:53

I have two ex colleagues who have had women with PCOS come to their surgery and ask if they are intersex because that’s what they have now been told in feminist groups. Hmm

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/05/2018 20:56

Thats the TRA lobby - since so many women suffer from pcos they want to co opt them all into the intersex group which is otherwise tiny. Then they can assert that so many people are intersex... 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ve seen it said to men with hypospadias as well.

It’s bollocks ofc - PCOS is a female condition that has no bearing on intersex conditions. And hypospadias are a structural issue during development- again nowt to do with intersex

SomeDyke · 22/05/2018 21:00

So, the AFAB/AMAB term, was stolen from intersex folk, where that was a true assessment of their actual condition. We see now what has happened given the TRA theft of incorrect and/or (deliberately?) confusing terminology, women with PCOS gaining incorrect information and thinking that perhaps they are intersex!

Glad to see some actual research from people not confused by sex/gender nonsense might actually have some potential to help cunty women.............

redshoeblueshoe · 22/05/2018 21:17

Hotrocker that's a plan

LaSqrrl · 22/05/2018 21:52

So, the AFAB/AMAB term, was stolen from intersex folk, where that was a true assessment of their actual condition.

A very long time ago, radfems were discussing how to include intersex (genetically male, usually AIS) that had been raised as females from birth. That is how it came about, FAAB, female assigned at birth. Of course, for women, it was just FAB (female at birth), to avoid that silly 'natal women' business. These days I just use the terms 'woman' and 'real woman' if I am in a shitty mood and want to rub it in.

Of course, TRAs stole FAAB, twisted it for their own ends, trying to slant it as 'zmog, the doctors made a big mistake, I knew I was "a woman" from the moment I was born' kind of crap.
