Peter Kyle MP is opening the debate. If you agree with the concerns of some lesbians, highlighted in the article below, you may want to tweet him and ask him to make sure your concerns on lesbophobia and the range of lesbian voices and concerns are represented in the discussion. You could also tweet/contact your own MP.

there's a backbench debate on “homophobia, transphobia and biphobia” which will offer some clues about how willing MPs are to acknowledge the complexity of the gender debate and the interests of the different people and groups concerned. Perhaps some of the things I’ve mentioned here will be raised. Perhaps."

As well as the debate mentioned, Penny Mordant is also taking questions as minister for women & equalities for the first time.

I'll be watching this with interest. I really hope someone speaks up for lesbians.

Wanderabout · 17/05/2018 09:55

Me too. Stonewall is suppose to represent their voices too. Pink News should be covering their interests and concerns in culture and law changes, not just trans activist concerns.

Total failure of representation.

Is there a preferred hashtag to add to tweets?

Wanderabout · 17/05/2018 10:20

Not sure does anyone know?

Will the backbench debate be watchable does anyone know?

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 12:30

I dont know if it will be available to watch later but currently they are talking about gambling machines in that room and the debate on homophobia etc is later down the agenda.

Agenda available here: calendar.parliament.uk

Doesn't say what time that debate is due to start.

R0wantrees · 17/05/2018 12:37

The earlier session with Penny Mordant which starts at 10.05 raised a lot of important issues affecting women & girls and can be watched on the link above.

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 13:09

Thank you R0wantrees I.will definitely look at that :)

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 18:22

The debate wasn't on that link, it is on this one: goo.gl/GqFz1y

Starts at 15:22

Just about to have a listen.

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 18:28

15:25 and Peter Kyle is quoting Bill Clinton Hmm

Picassospaintbrush · 17/05/2018 18:38

Dawn Butler urging the GRA consultation to start.

R0wantrees · 17/05/2018 18:42

Dawn Butler referred to a social media platform where there were calls for a new section 28.

Picassospaintbrush · 17/05/2018 18:44

She got the dog whistle out.

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 18:46

Chats about how lgbt are essential to the army, some funny bits here; says govt is the least homophobic place he has ever worked and he hopes that soon it can be as friendly to trans people; sas unis need to learn lessons bc statistics abt a third of trans ppl saying they've been harassed.

Now talking about Pride and plugging Brighton Pride, he can't control his smugness about Britney Spears coming to that.

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 18:46

The way they all talk comes across as so insincere

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 19:02

Stephen Doughty starts talking about trans rights at 15:47

Before this it is striking how nearly everything spoken about is really specific to the LG but the T still has to be tagged on as if it suffers the same discrimination and oppression. The LG who have criticisms of the T and want to pull away, we need to lift up those voices and make it as clear as possible that they are very different.

flintyminty · 17/05/2018 19:04

Just noticed Gender Recognition Act trending on Twitter. Looks like government expecting to launch consultation by end of July. Dawn Butler and LM already tweeting about it.

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 19:05

I think twice Doughty referred to 'homophobia transphobia and biphobia' as "three evils" and this is what I mean, constantly working to tie these things together.

LangCleg · 17/05/2018 19:06

Dawn Butler referred to a social media platform where there were calls for a new section 28.

She did what?!

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 19:08

Dawn Butler speaks in this a bit later, there was a mention of the false suicide stat and I'm looking for who gave it first.

We are in for a big fight here over the GRA consultation, the people pushing it are zealots, but they see themselves as heroes.

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 19:21

Christine Jardine, LibDem 16:22 - says 45% of trans people attempt suicide

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 19:23

Sorry not a general 'people', she specifically says 45% of trans school pupils in the UK

JoanSummers · 17/05/2018 19:26

16:23 Crispin Blunt talking about the GRA and how they are committed to doing this consultation
