Google algorithms changed?

If you Google woman murdered uk or women murder figures uk - you no longer get a list of female identified trans murdered. Can people confirm?

Yes I noticed this recently.

It used to be just transwomen on the first page which was peculiar to say the least.

Now you get refuge, womens aid etc

Pratchet · 13/05/2018 00:00

I believe our exposure of the algorithm cured that problem

I googled "Women killed in 2018" and still get mostly transwomen / transgender sites.

Results from "Women murdered in 2018" are also all about transwomen for me.

BUT I googled "Women killed in 2017" and it brings up Guardian article about a woman killed at the top, and then Karen Ingalia Smith website appears on three results. Looking more what you'd expect.

Opheliah · 13/05/2018 08:38

Curiously the top result in Google from "Women murdered 2018" is from the Guardian, 4th April and contains the statement
"A woman has been charged with his murder" the rest are all Trans sites.

Make of that what you will.

rememberthetime · 13/05/2018 08:40

Do Google use your own search history to create a bespoke search list from the terms you put in?

So if you've been Googling lots about transwomen recently, it's going to put those results near the top of the lost.

No idea if this is how it works - despite working in this industry (Google's algorithms are a mystery to most people).

c75kp0r · 13/05/2018 08:40

Google experiments with adjustments to its search all the time. It personalises search so you get results tailored to your interests and it censors content without telling you. ( the example often given is a directory of child abuse images which google pretends doesnt exist)

Different search syntax will give different results, also remember their revenue comes from advertising so their search is optimised with that in mind.
If you use the verbatim search on google, that can help or try a different search such as duck duck go, yandex or bing

c75kp0r · 13/05/2018 08:46

Searching for how google works will take you only to information about seo and adwords. You need to follow someone like .Karen Blakeman, Phil Bradley or Stephen Abram

Do Google use your own search history to create a bespoke search list from the terms you put in?

They do for ads but I'm not sure they do for results. Anyway if they did that, because my job is related to prostitution I Google stuff related to women in prostitution, poverty, trafficking, VAWG, sites selling sex services etc or car hire or shopping things and have honestly never googled trans related anything in my life. So my results should be tilted towards VAWG. They're not.

It's likely some sort of "Google bombing".

Pratchet · 13/05/2018 09:07

I spoke too soon. I added 2018 and the seventh hit was transgender day of visibility

OP posts:
Opheliah · 13/05/2018 09:11

Wikipedia all about trans shows up 3rd! Very suspicious.
Oh well.

BobbiBabbler · 13/05/2018 09:11

That's outrageous. The only mention of women on the front page of my search was a woman who killed a man, and about 6 hits down, Karen ingala smiths website. The rest was trans. I guess women getting murdered isn't important.

DragonsAndCakes · 13/05/2018 09:15

Are you filling in the Feedback at the bottom of the page?

I’ve only done ‘women murdered 2018’ and it’s mostly reasonable, but I’ll try a few more.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/05/2018 09:31

I went 'incognito' and searched. Only Bing seems to bring up real women. All the others, and I had to search a list of search engines, seem to focus on trans.

Oooh! I thought that had stopped!

HarrietSchulenberg · 13/05/2018 09:40

I've just searched "women murdered figures uk" and had no trans hits on the first page (10 results). Not viewed further pages. I rarely, if ever, Google trans so I'd suggest it's a personal algorithim thing.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/05/2018 10:03

Ah! That search does only get real figures. If you add the year it all changes.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/05/2018 10:06

If you add UK you get real figures, so it seems that the key trans search terms are:
Women
Murdered
and a year

If you search any other variant it doesn't seem to trip the Trans algorithm

Opheliah · 13/05/2018 10:10

Ah yes when you type
"women murdered 2018 UK" you get Karen Ingalia Smith and Women's Aid and expected results.

Without "UK" you get all Trans stuff.

Pratchet · 13/05/2018 10:26

Fascinating

OP posts:

You can push results up the list by increasing their popularity. There are ways to manipulate the results if you have time and resources and it savvy.

SardineReturns · 13/05/2018 11:48

And it's clear this was done some time earth last year I think it was when searches about women being murdered (which you make sometimes if you are in conversations about feminism) switched to bring back results on trans women only in first page. Looks like some of them have changed back (how why).

HerFemaleness · 13/05/2018 11:59

I wonder if it's anything to do with how widely the murders were reported. Transwomen murders are very rare in the UK so when they happen they get quite a significant amount of media coverage.

PositivelyPERF · 13/05/2018 12:08

A lot of TIMs work in IT so they would find it very easy to manipulate google searches.

LaSqrrl · 13/05/2018 12:27

I have been using Google since the beginning of time, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. But in the last few years, they suck and suck bigtime. That 'woman' searches bring up reams of non-women that call themselves women - outrageous!

And btw, if you type 'google' into Google, you WILL break the internet. I have this on good authority. (LOL)

SardineReturns · 13/05/2018 12:36

? @ previous post

Anyway

I looked into this a little when my friend started her business

Yes you can manupulate results and this was obviously done as the results changed, all at once, it was not gradual as you might expect if it was a "natural" change.

Why is has changed back for the UK is ? but good.

c75kp0r · 14/05/2018 07:47

It isn't just governed by Adwords -
Google gives different results to different people.
Google is constantly testing new algorithms

www.qdigitalstudio.com/library/reasons-your-google-search-results-are-different-than-mine

You will also find that if you ask whether something is "bad" for you, that the results are likely to be different than if you search for it being "good" for you
