Portugal's president vetoes new gender-change law

Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has vetoed a law that would have made it easier for people to change their gender and name in documents.

The law, approved by parliament last month, would have allowed citizens to make the legal changes from the age of 16 without the need of a medical test.

Quite the turn around.

That sounds fair; the law would apparently mean you could change your gender from the age of 16 without a medical test.

The president has asked that they amend the law to retain the medical test for those aged under 18. He apparently hasn't queried the removal of the test for those aged 18 and over.

So apparently they can now amend the law to include that at the president's request, or they can try and push it through with an absolute majority. Not knowing much about it I imagine they'll amend it.

The result being the ability for those 18 and over to be able to change gender without a medical test, and those under 18 (over 16) to be able to change it with a medical test.

Sounds fair enough to me.
