NHS to make perinatal mental health available across England
NHS England aims to make services for new and expectant mothers accessible within a year

NHS England said that estimates suggested only 3% of the country had good access to perinatal mental health care as recently as 2014, but that it expected to have extended that to 100% by next April.

And

Justine Roberts, the founder of Mumsnet, said the community’s campaign for better postnatal care had highlighted the “breadth of perinatal mental health vulnerabilities, and has shown how many women struggle on with symptoms that make them feel miserable or worse”.

Just want to do a big shout out THANK YOU @MNHQ.

I've talked on MN about the subject for many years. I chose to go to the nearest hospital with specialist services when I had my son. There are SIXTEEN maternity units that are closer in distance (though in time fortunately it was less of an issue and maybe 20mins longer travel time). It was at the time the only hospital in the NW with such services.

To here this news today is BRILLIANT.

Wine Cheers to the power of MN

Thank you Justine @MNHQ - very good news. Flowers
Now we need to ensure that this is properly funded.

Excellent news. I could have really done with mental health help for a few months before and a whole year after the birth of DD2.

As PP says, funding will be critical.

Brilliant news. I have an amazing local perinatal MH team. I had a CPN who I had regular sessions with in pregnancy and after DS2 was born. When I had a MH crisis, she was at my house within 45 minutes and my psychiatrist had prescribed my medication so I could start it that day. I owe them so much. Every Mother and family should have access to care like that, it would improve so many lives.

That’s great. Also lucky to live in an area with good perinatal mental health care and I will be forever grateful to the care and support I had. It made a massive difference to me and my family at a difficult time and everyone should have that.

smithsinarazz · 08/05/2018 21:22

Thank you MNHQ. I have had the most amazing perinatal support, and I don't like to think of anyone else in a similar position to me having to go it alone.

Fantastic news!
I read some of your excellent posts citing research on this topic whilst lurking RedToothBrush, and I was shocked. Thanks you and thanks to MNHQ!
