Completely forgetting the trans dimension and focusing on biological women how does this idea grab everyone?

  1. Tight term limits so one maybe two terms for every democratically elected position (With the added benefit of basically getting rid of the career politician).
  1. Only men or women can be canditates alternating for each election cycle. So for the two term limit only men can apply for those two cycles, then it alternates and only women can apply for the next cycle.
  1. Each post in each locality is initially seperated 50/50 so we get a true representation in our elected representatives. This would need to be constitutionally amended of course.

Can anyone see any inherent flaws in this? If so could it be refined? I can't see any immediate problems, but it's my idea so very possible there are! Would seem to tick both equality of opportunity AND outcome simultaneously. Am I wrong?

I'm not keen on such short terms. The us congress seems to be entirely focused on pleasing people who will pay for the next election. Elections are expensive just to organise, wouldn't it double the cost? I quite like a career politician myself.

I think there's quite a benefit to have people who have a mix of abilities in the house, so limiting everyone to two terms will lose some people with significant political experience and will be detrimental.

Some people won't vote for candidates because of their sex or race. This is anecdotal but having helped at local elections when I was younger in a ward where there were 3 councillors some voters would only use two of their votes rather than vote for a woman or a Pakistani man. It was disgusting to see.

Until we defeat the sexism that is prevalent and acceptable in society as a whole I don't know how we'll get balance in parliament, unless we go down a proportional representation route and the parties put up equal numbers of men and women.
