Commons debate

Peter Kyle MP (Labour) has tweeted:
Bingo! Have secured a 3 hour debate in the Commons to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. I can’t wait to open the debate then listen and learn from others on May 17th

Peter Kyle has done some great work for women (against sex for rent, and to stop people having to face their rapist in court,) so I hope he will frame this debate in an even-handed way, and a little light may be shed.

It will be difficult for gender critical MPs to speak out, but here is a chance, at least. A chance to discuss what transphobia actually is, and isn't. A chance for someone to say that it's not hateful to talk about women's rights.

A debate!

Can't make this clicky:

Sounds like a good basis on which to write to your MP. Will you be taking part in the debate? Will you be raising the conflict of trans rights with those of women and girls? etc.

Terfulike · 02/05/2018 10:04

I personally think it will be used as an opportunity to criticise mn and further the tra cause.

RedToothBrush · 02/05/2018 10:08

What about the lesbians...

Terfulike · 02/05/2018 10:08

One of the big problems with it is the conflation of homophobia with transphobia. They are different things. We all know how homophobic tras can be regarding lesbians and I'll be surprised if the cotton ceiling gets mentioned.

WrongOnTheInternet · 02/05/2018 10:11

Yeah, what Terfulike said. If this was going to be an even handed debate they wouldn't be lumping trans in with homosexuality and bisexuality, because (or so they tell us) being trans has nothing to do with sexuality.

AncientLights · 02/05/2018 10:31

I think we need to view this positively. If we all message our own MP as Flowers says above, plus more questions, we can surely have some sort of effect. And the point that trans isn't a sexuality is very valid and can also be raised. I don't know about HoC debates but 3 hr seems a long time: is that a normal time period for a debate or is it an indication of importance or what?

Please have a look at the transphobia that @shonfaye is experiencing at @MumsnetTowers it’s utterly dehumanising and they seem to have no interest in stopping the page after page of attacks on her.

Is there a thread about Shon Faye on here ATM? Where are the page after page of attacks?

WrongOnTheInternet · 02/05/2018 10:40

I guess it might be interesting to see if lesbians are mentioned. If the only options mentioned are bisexuality and homosexuality it may be worth emailing my MP again to point out the lack I suppose. I already know she is firmly of the 'transwomen are women' and 'men are no threat to women' camp though (Labour, 'nuff said), so I'm not sure I see much point.

RedToothBrush · 02/05/2018 10:43

There is room to ask what counts as transphobia.

As in everything.

FloraFox · 02/05/2018 11:28

My best guess is that this will be a parade of virtue signallers and anyone remotely questioning will be absent or sit on their hands.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 02/05/2018 11:29

Thank you. Will contact MP again & be ignored again

flowersonthepiano · 02/05/2018 11:40

Yes, I have been ignored so far too. Although my MP is conspicuously busy campaigning against privatisation of NHS service staff and in the local elections tbf.... I wish I could stop being so bloody reasonable

Yep. My heart sank when I read the OP.

I know. Surely at least one MP might be willing to talk about the impacts on women's rights? Did someone mention that Caroline Flint is gender critical? Could we appeal to her?

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 02/05/2018 12:08

I'm in the middle of composing an endless changing letter to my mp. So, this is a good opportunity to send it. Every time I think I'm finished some new horror happens and I feel i need to include it (Maria M being forced by the judge to lie, the GG policy) and then it gets too long (i think you have to accept they're busy and make it fairly short and snappy) and I need to edit. The conflation of homophobia and transphobia is really annoying.

Terfulike · 02/05/2018 13:55

My mp was really good when I met her (Wera Hobhouse lib dem bath). She said she was going to look at the womans place website. I hope she at least mentions the fact that there are reasonable women who just want to be included in consultations.

R0wantrees · 02/05/2018 13:56

this is interesting timing given the Stonewall reception for MPs on May 15th...

Hopefully some of the many issues raised in yesterday's Spectator by James Kirkup will be more widely discussed in the coming days.
