Just though you'd like to know Grin.

I have held back from even discussing it for months as I have a very diverse bunch of mum friends (inner London primary school) and was nervous about 'coming out'.

Anyway, tonight one of the mums started talking about austerity and the need to vote Labour in the coming local elections. I have left Labour over Self ID and just thought 'fuck it' and told them all on our whatsapp group that I wasn't voting Labour (in fact sadly, am spoiling my vote Sad) and why. Braced myself for a shit storm....

Nothing of the sort!

They all think its horrendous, have signed the petition and are considering their Labour vote. These are mostly a) Corbynistas or b) not very politicised but definitely Lab voters. Only one is a Tory voter and she is shocked, too.

There ya go...another 15 women get angry about this shit! Better than nothing...

Yes when women are under attack, in whatever circumstance, it quickly becomes apparent who their real friends are. The silence of many gay men on this issue plus the erasure of lesbian spaces is deafening

Like so many men, they're not going to bother until it affects them.

ManFriday at the men only swimming pond, steam rooms, whatever.

I would hope that once they realise, they'd be good sports about the protest and at least support rather than hinder, but who knows

I've been working on family and friends. I'm involved with a refuge so mainly talk about my fears that self ID would let men access those kind of places. Most people get it immediately when put in those terms. Just a few 'woke' stalwarts who disagree.

LangCleg · 26/04/2018 08:37

Well done, OP!

I have found that the Guides and mixed sex tents for overnights without telling parents is the thing that really engages people.

UpstartCrow · 26/04/2018 08:53

I'm thinking of going door to door with leaflets. (What could possibly go wrong?)

Merchfach · 26/04/2018 09:18

Well done. This is the way it's going to happen, a few women at a time. The Vancouver Incel attack has made it easier to talk about misogyny and it's not difficult, I've found, to move from that to the men in masks preventing the speakers getting to the stage at the event in Bristol last week and then on to the whole Transgender thing and the men's rights movement.

I talked to two young women yesterday who I thought might well be handmaidens. We started with Vancouver and I mentioned Bristol and by the time we said goodbye they were wondering if they could get to the next WPUK meeting.

Well done!

Wrt experiences of how to communicate the point most effectively, I find referring to 'sexed-bodies' quite helpful as it cuts through some of the issues relating to the 'trans umbrella' being so broad.

I say something along the lines of, as someone with a female-sexed body, when I am admitted to hospital, I am happy to share a ward/bay with people regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity, I just ask that the ward/bay is designated for those who have female-sexed bodies. Sharing with people with male sexed bodies would compromise by dignity and privacy.

I also ask if people think there is any merit in the provision of same-sex services. If they think there is, they rarely conclude that gender identity is the driving principle behind the provision!

I've been meaning to sign for a while and your thread reminded me so I've finally done it. Thanks OP (and to the poster who provided the link).

Juells · 26/04/2018 09:49

Oh my God! I haven't been following the news so didn't understand the reference to the Vancouver Incel attack. Have just googled.

“Stacys” are “women who are withholding their sexual opportunities from men.”
It's like living in an alternate universe, at the moment. Fucking insane.

AngryAttackKittens · 26/04/2018 09:52

Shame we can't deport incels to a separate universe...

ChickenMe · 26/04/2018 11:07

I work mainly with men
Sort of a 20:80 ratio
Those that I've told think it's ridiculous (self ID) and when you talk about penises in women's refuges or stuff that may affect their daughters they defo get it. I do t think they'd sign a petition but at least to introduce a bit of critical thinking is something

LaSqrrl · 26/04/2018 11:15

Well done.
As for the gay men, most are still silent, a few over recent years have spoken out. Disappointing they have not generally been there for the Ls in the alphabet.
