OB/GYNs don’t learn the nerves and vasculature of the clitoris in USA

I thought I was reading a satirical blog on a radfem group but no, turns out to be true. Is it the same in the UK/Australia anyone know?

However, modern OB/GYN textbook anatomy only shows the course leading up to the clitoris (except in most recent Williams Gynecology, but it is not clearly labeled and there is no accompanying description). Nerves (large, not difficult to dissect) and vasculature in the clitoris itself are omitted.

Comment from a survey responder:

As a urologist, I know from personal experience that the gynecology journals are not generally that interested in female genital anatomy

I have read similar things, years ago. It's one of the reasons I was determined to have c-sections. I know women who've had their sexual function affected by childbirth and couldn't really get anyone to be interested in it. Having orgasms is one of my favourite things and I'd like to keep doing it.

As a midwife in the U.K. I’ve never been taught it either at uni or heard anything about it in 15 years of practice. If someone’s clitoris tears in childbirth (rare) I would get a doctor to suture it rather than do it myself but from what I’ve seen it’s a quick 20 second job of that end matches that end, hold it together and put a stitch in to secure. Nobody is concerned about nerves.

And yet ... now men can buy Viagra OTC in Boots

Appalling, but can’t say I’m wholly surprised.

I guess in the UK, the RCOG (royal college of obstetricians & gynaecologists) would be the body to ask about training of UK clinicians on this.

Thats dreadful

Australian urologist Dr Helen O'Connell has been leading work on the true anatomy of the clitoris for a while now, but still relatively recently (2006) compared to anatomy texts used in universities.

She's brilliant: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5013866.stm

Is this any different in other parts of the world? My impression is that doctors in general consider female sexual pleasure irrelevant.

I remember learning this from an article in Cosmopolitan (I think) years and years ago - at the very least back in the 1990s.

how disappointing that things have not moved on.

Ekphrasis · 23/04/2018 09:12

I am really not surprised.

Have you seen the 3D printed clitoris? Blew my mind when I first saw it.
