By Janelle Monáe and Tessa Thompson

Forget pussy hats I want vulva trousers...

It is pure brilliance.

0phelia · 18/04/2018 17:55

Yes I posted the same op praising it yesterday!
But apparently the press release is disappointing.

Ekphrasis · 18/04/2018 17:57

Ah sorry I missed it!

In what way is it disappointing?

Hmm I found this review ....Hmm

“Pynk” takes elements from both to become a jam as defiant as it is smooth, imagining a world in which men either don’t exist or don’t particularly matter. It is worth pointing out that this kind of “pussy power” does tend to exclude trans women, and we could always stand to think harder about how to include all forms of womanhood in such feminist celebrations. But given how some male artists have called upon similar imagery and entendres to define women entirely by their body parts, it’s still refreshing to watch Monáe remix the sentiment to be empowering rather than reductive.

That they had to apologetically remind everyone that the vagina pants are inclusive all types of women not just those with vaginas.... that sort of thing.

But the video is very proudly vagina centric and I think it's fab.

0phelia · 18/04/2018 18:04

Haha that review! Fuck off. (*)

thebewilderness · 18/04/2018 18:07

The transgender identified males on tumblr are incensed that this woman had the nerve to speak for herself without presenting trans as the main character in the story of her life.

Ekphrasis · 18/04/2018 18:08

Well a review in the guardian comments that 'not all the women are wearing the trousers as not all women have vaginas'...

Cooking so post in a bit...

What is empowering about this? I really don't get what is supposed to be so great about it.

Ekphrasis · 18/04/2018 18:33

Can't quite make head not tail of this article - not sure why she's described as 'queer' and 'wide awoke' is annoying.

I feel like the artist has had to be inclusive but is getting away with as little as possible - maybe why there's the "how very dare yous".

Did find this comment funny though:
"Meanwhile, at the other end of the pop age spectrum, Keith Richards dons his angina pants."

I must say, the first article almost (but not quite) makes the point that its alright for men to make videos objectifying women's body parts so great to see women doing so, but why aren't those videos 'inclusive'...

Oops

I don't think it's empowering. I think it's visually funny.

It's a blacklash against the very vocal group of people appropriating racism in response to the "Women's March" where pink pussy hats were seen.

A whole dialogue opened up after that and appropriated racism in a very offensive way.

A vocal group (made up of mostly TRAs) said the Women's March was racist because "not all women have pink vaginas" because this vocal minority did not know the difference between vulva and vagina.

They said "talking about vaginas is exclusionary to transwomen and black women are excluded by pink pussy hats" after the Women's March.

The video is a reaction to that, because actually all vaginas are pink but vulva is skin tone and stop comparing transphobia to racism. But obviously they've been image managed to dilute the message in the video via press release and pay lipservice to inclusivity.

thebewilderness · 18/04/2018 20:34

It was the reviewer who claimed it was empowering, not the artist.

Ekphrasis · 18/04/2018 22:34

Twitter has pissed me off as some TRAs (announcing "to all terfs who think this about vaginal centric feminism" are saying it's also about about all women, some women don't wear the vagina trousers, citing even the pink baseball bat as it's a 'female penis'. Which is really not what I saw; I saw either a vaginal channel or a penis. Later there's a pink penis shaped boxing bag being boxed.

I got a bit pissed off briefly about the phrase "pink like the folds in my brain" - is this a pink lady brain? But on reflection, it really is about the fact black Women have pink vaginas and every other body part.

Bit as ophelia says there's clearly a little ego massaging and lip service to inclusivity.
