Ruth Davidson

In today's Times she is being touted as the next conservative leader. A quick google brought up a speech in which she praised Justine Greening's work on trans rights. Does anyone know more about her personal views on self ID, etc?
Is there any hope that she could turn out to be gender critical? I'm pinning all of my hopes on the Torys turning around.

I expect she thinks that being a woman hasn't held her back, so we just need to be more like her

Being a woman who is a lesbian and is not conventionally attractive and makes few , if any, concessions to being conventionally attractive has not held her back. "Being more like her" is hardly bad advice.

Davidson is my constituency MSP. This issue is not a top priority for me , nor I doubt the majority of her constituents. There are plenty of issues for her to hold the SNP to account for.

ParisUSM · 19/04/2018 18:42

I think you'd be wasting your time contacting Ruth Davidson. She would be unlikely to reply unless you lived in her constituency. She's notorious for not holding surgeries and seems to be more concerned with tv appearances (if they suit her agenda, she walks away if they don't) . I've never seen her as a protector of womens' rights and think the way she's portrayed by the uk media is very out of step with the reality. The Tories are on 24% in Scotland and in 3rd place. She's also done nothing about some pretty appalling behaviour by councillors.

moofolk · 19/04/2018 21:46

I love Ruth Davidson. She is that very dangerous thing, possibly the scariest and most dangerous of all: a likeable Tory. Shudder.

DJLippy · 20/04/2018 00:35

I remember her making a big song and dance about her LGBT crednitals - saying she was a lesbian first, a conservative second and a unionist last but when it came time to form a co-allition with the DUP she went very quiet. She said she'd received certain 'reassurances' from Teresa May. Last time I checked gay marriage was still illegal in Northern Ireland. Careerist. Never trust a politician.

foxyliz26 · 20/04/2018 00:48

Having met Ruth once , she always seems to make up her own mind on every issue , cant say I agree with her politics

most of us University educated lesbians are pretty well rounded and comfortable in our own being, to worry about what some young and foolish idiots are doing which wont have any impact on our lives

at least this reintroduction some form of Clause 28 fantasy from some Mumsnetters would get short shift !

2rebecca · 26/04/2018 20:50

Will she now join mumsnet? Perhaps she's here already. She definitely did her bit for the lesbian day of visibility. Waves.

Wanderabout · 26/04/2018 21:10

Lots of MPs don't know about the implications of the law for women and girls. Definitely worth meeting her if she's your MSP, contact and ask , what's the worst thing that can happen?

It's always worth meeting with your MP to raise your concerns about the impact of the GRA.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/04/2018 21:41

Ruth has just announced she is 13 weeks pregnant.

IndominusRex · 26/04/2018 23:03

I'm delighted for her and Jen.

2rebecca · 26/04/2018 23:10

Agree, I'm far more pleased about this news than the royal baby. Never voted Tory either although she makes the Tories seem human, they just need some policies I like now...

Amortentia · 26/04/2018 23:15

Are any of you who like Ruth Davidson actually living in Scotland? She is no feminist, well actually she might qualify as one of the current breed of (non)feminists.

I agree with Charlie, She may present a likeable face, but underneath it she is a typical Tory. Scratch the surface and there is nothing likeable under there, if she’s not defending appalling policies she’s changing her mind like the weather. She does not stand up to any scrutiny.

2rebecca · 26/04/2018 23:20

Yes, I still think she's more likeable than many politicians. You can like someone (or your idea of someone, never having met her I just have the public image to go on) whilst disagreeing with them on ideas and politics. I think she's a Tory who genuinely believes the poor get richer via trickle down and personal effort rather than a let the poor starve they don't matter sort of Tory. My family is full of male Tories and female socialists.

You have been misinformed. This was not posited by Mumsnetters in earnest. A pro-trans poster wrote that sentence as a sarcastic reply to someone else. The pro-trans poster did not indulge in that fantasy, obviously, and no one else agreed with it either.

CharlieParley · 26/04/2018 23:24

2rebecca I wonder what gave you that idea? From all that she's said and written and supported, she seems very much like someone who doesn't give a toss about the poor, especially poor women.

trixymalixy · 26/04/2018 23:36

I’m in Scotland and I like Ruth. I’m delighted for her and Jen. Shame she’s a Tory as she’ll never get my vote.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/04/2018 23:40

Are any of you who like Ruth Davidson actually living in Scotland?

Yes. I'm in her constituency and I voted for her.

Cwenthryth · 27/04/2018 06:40

Ruth Davidson confuses me. I can’t get my head around how she reconciles her politics with her personal values. It all feels a little ‘I’m alright Jack’.

Her pregnancy announcement just popped up on my Twitter feed, and Robert Webb tweeted her congratulations and then got jumped on about her hypocritical politics.

2rebecca · 04/05/2018 20:56

Have been following her on twitter and have yet to see her tweet anything remotely feminist sadly. The woman is obsessed with football! Seriously tedious. It's like following the tweets of my sister's boyfriend but Scottish football instead of English, with a few armed forces visits thrown in.

LassWiADelicateAir · 04/05/2018 20:59

Are women not meant to be interested in football?

2rebecca · 04/05/2018 21:14

I don't understand that level of interest in football. I cycle and enjoy watching cycling (should go and watch tour of yorkshire now) but find the number of tweets on it weird. It's like she's trying too hard to be blokey. And foot ball seems far more important to her than feminism which is OK if you're a woman but does disappoint me.

Wisdens · 04/05/2018 21:15

with a few armed forces visits thrown in

Maybe because she’s an officer in the Reserves?

Not every woman has to continually be tweeting feminist stuff......

Wisdens · 04/05/2018 21:18

We want women in positions of power, just as long as they are the 'right' kind of woman that we approve of......

2rebecca · 04/05/2018 21:44

True, the type of person someone is and their beliefs and values are more important than their gender when it comes to politics. A lot of women in politics disappoint me, so do a lot of men. I have higher expectations of the women though. I don't want them to be obsessed by men kicking a ball around. Not saying they can't tweet endlessly about that, I just find it disappointing.

cistersofterfy · 04/05/2018 21:47

For goodness sake, she likes football. Tbh, I wish Theresa May spent more time tweeting about football and less time enacting conservative policies that make our society a far less compassionate one to live in.

Bejazzled · 04/05/2018 21:52

I'm in Scotland and think she's a breath of fresh air. Oh my, the irony of a woman being slagged on a feminist thread for liking football and being proud of the army Confused
It's basically if you are a Tory then you can't be given credit for anything.
